ue ee ee ewe ere Vee VV ee OTe eee -- THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdoy, September 7, 1966 19 New Upholstered Furniture Characterized By Comfort By ELEANOR ROSS E sive in scale and ex- pensive in appearance, the new uphoisiered furniture 1s char- mitesiacn bo Ghats and aqtae almost big enough to get lost in. Upholstery billows and bulges as never before, with fat cush- foning of sink-down, pop-up la- tex foam rubber for the highest possible comfort quotient. Many of the new pieces are wrapped in luxury, with sofas and chairs actually upholstered from top to bottom--including the legs--in lush velvety fabrics or simulated furs, and nary a smidgen of wood visible. High marshmallow cushioning and all-over tufting exaggerate an already. billowing silhouette. Taste, however, is not a lost cause in this new trend toward supersize. 'Chunky Modern," a revival of the "Thirties,", is an understated (except for size) version of the phony flamboy- ance of that era. But it is now handled with flair to provide expansive and tasteful comfort. Modern Prison For Female Addicts In British Columbia MATSQUI, B.C. (CP) -- The first federal prison for women in Western Canada is in opera- tion in the Fraser Valley as part of the Matsqui Institution | for narcotics addicts. Designed to hold 150 prison- + ers, the women's section had 15 when it opened early in August. The 15 were women from West- ern Canada who had been serv- ing two years or more at King- ston, Ont. They elected a trans- fer to a prison closer to home, Upholstery 'fabrics are luxur- ious, and it's velvet all the way whether antique, striated, printed or cut. Silks and. satins are used. too, and there are plenty of furry fabrics, pon real and simulated. | Allover diamond or biscuit tufting adds girth and comfort to underpinnings of genuine la- tex foam rubber for reslience and ease. Crystal, lucite and stainless steel, art nouveau, fabric- wrapped arms and legs, rich rosewood and smoked glass are all part of the picture in. this return to the Thirties in terms of upholstered furniture. The "remembrance of things past" motif extends also to Eng- land of the 16th and 17th cen- turies, wiht furniture designs of that era gaining in popularity. The scale here is also massive and solid, with much use of sturdy woods such as Appa- lachian oak, pecan, as well as leather or vinyl. The woods are heavily carved and distressed, the frames larg and bulky--a robust style rem- iniscent of Merrie Olde Eng- land and somehow as stalwart as the Rock of Gibralter. Mediterranean, newly '"'dis- covered" a fey seasons back, looks more and more like this new-old English . furniture--or perhaps the latter looks more like Mediterranean and Span- ish, At any rate, the resem- |blance is strong and one style imelts harmoniously into the other, So who cares whether it is Spanish with an English accent or English with a Spanish lilt. It's big, bulky and comfortable and solidly entrenched in the American way of life. THE HOME OF THE BRANDS Where good taste in fashion is not expensive. Women from Eastern Canada) will continue to be kept at King- ston, | ee A rl In future all addicts in the} West sentenced to federal terms) will also be sent here. | The modern, low-slung build-) ing with gardens and a lounge with a fireplace will have its own hospital, schoolrooms, workshops and training facili-| ties. There are no bars. Instead the windows have modern-look- ing concrete screens that make Wilson's escape impossible. Patricia Rita Spence, 32, was named superintendent in mid- June and is in charge of a staff] of 60.
