(CP)--If Santa Viaus ever decides to move from the North Pole he couldn't do better than put up at Reindeer Station, It has everything he'd need: - 10,000 reindeer grazing within a few miles; eight herders to round them up; women to sew moccasins and other suitable clothing, and a Hudson's Bay Co. trading post from which to fill his sack. There's even a harness for hitching reindeer to.a sled--one of the last of its type--hanging on the wall of the one-room schoolhouse. , _Reindeer Station is on the Mackenzie River 25 miles south of where the mighty waterway empties into the Arctic Ocean. You can reach it by arranging a drop-off from an air flight from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk or by motor boat from either * place. Old northern hands say it is one of the few places where the old Arctic still lingers, barely touched by modern schooling, social welfare, liquor or the civil service. | Reindeer Station actually is one of the first attempts at a federal project in the North. It was founded on the recom- mendation of the explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, who said Canadian Eskimos should be} trained as reindeer herders, as| a means of continuing liveli-; hood. | It didn't work out as Stef-| ansson predicted. This would produce 500 tons of meat a year, enough "It's unpractical," hansson told them. 'Reindeer have to stop and feed every two or three hours. And once you've unhitched them it takes hours to catch them again. Dogs are much better." Santa Claus will probably be the only person ever to pick the harness off the schoolroom wall.
