Expo Express On Exhibit Rapid Service To Montreal One of the eight six-car Expo- Express 'primary rapid transit trains to be used at next years Montreal World's Fair was opened for public inspection at Union Station, Toronto last week. Built by Ontario workers at Hawker Siddeley Canada's Can- Car plant in Fort William, it features some of the most up- to-date railway equipment in the world. The automatic elec- tric train which will run along a 3.7 mile track from the Expo entrance to La Ronde amuse- ment area, will be powered by a-third surface rail laid out over its entire route on Expo grounds. This third rail is not, of course, part of the C.P.R. track over which the train tra- velled from Fort William to Toronto so that the train had to be pushed and pulled by locomotive. Expo Express' automatic sys- tem was developed by the Uni- switch Corporation (WABCO) and will make this train the first fully automatic one to operate in North America. All ears feature brushed grey aluminum sides, with gleam- ing metal used for the roof and the blue Expo symbol on the front end, The trains will provide free- of - charge transportation for Expo's estimated 30,000,000 visi- tors who may use them as often as they wish. Equipped with wide pano- ramic windows for maximum comfort and pleasure, Expo- Express will have a capacity of 30,000 passengers per hour. It is of ultra-modern design, lightweight (because -of its aluminum construction) and will surface travel on_ steel wieeis over steel fails. 'Lawrence Seaway. The trains' traction motors are Belgium made, while the brake com- ponents were purchased in England, and_ air-conditioning equipment in the United States. Supplies for the transit system include plywood and bridge timber from British Columbia, aluminum and wheels from Quebec, axles and rails from Nova Scotia, and trucks from Ontario.
