The African bloc at the con- ference has already made known it will seek an adjourn- ment as soon as Wilson has fin- speaking so its members tan study his proposals. Other , private discussions can also be expected before the conference resumes in the afternoon. Zambia, Rhodesia's neighbor, s been the most militant in demands for British action. MAY WALK OUT There was a strong possibility 'that Simon Kapwepwe, the Zambian foreign minister, would walk out of the confer- | ence if President Kenneth Kaunda found Wilson's propos- | 'als too weak. ' How many others would fol- ow remains in doubt. Prime Minister Sir Albert Margai of Sierra Leone has vaguely threatened to leave the Com- 'monwealth over Rhodesia. But gome of the others who have 'British PM To Reveal. 'Rhodesian Curb Plans been insistent in their demands on Britain here were not con- sidered likely to take such a drastic step. Among - the there was continuing discussion dur- ing the weekend of the possi- bility of a:compromise along the lines suggested Friday by Prime Minister Lester Pearson. The Canadian leader indicated he thought it should be possible to find a formula which would provide for' constitutional con- trol for the majority Negroes in Rhodesia without immediate un- iversal. suffrage--the one-man, one-vote sought by the African leaders--a proposition sure to be rejected totally by the Rho- desian whites. Another of Pearson's sugges- tions seemed to have cusses! Bi chance of meeting majority ap- proval at the conference. SELECTIVE SANCTIONS . Rather than the general man- datory sanctions against Rhode- sia which several delegates had suggested be sought through the United Nations, Pearson pro- posed selective sanctions which would hit the most crucial of Rhodesia's trade and yet avoid an open clash with South Africa and Portugal. Wilson was reported ready to go along with this and it seemed to be gathering increasing fa- vor among other delegations. The British prime minister played a close hand during the weekend, when he entertained groups of delegates at Chequers. Without making his position completely clear--and, appar- ently, disappointing several of his guests by being reticent about the whole Rhodesia ques- tion--Wilson managed to leave the impression that the British government was not prepared to guarantee majority rule explic- itly before ind alan mn tne SSSSE5. Even if Wilson proved more tractable about the African de- mands on majority rule than many observers expected, the ish With the Rhodesian question before Tuesday, Since there has not even been the usual review of world and Commonwealth affairs yet -- Rhodesia has been the only item discussed in four days of sit- Hings--there was little prospect of giving detailed study to any other problems before the scheduled adjournment Thurs- day. eg Finds es Below VANCOUVER (CP) -- This city's civic museum, is conduct- ing a major archeological ex- ploration--through its own base- ment. About to move to new, mod- ern and much larger quarters, museum officials are cata- loguing old exhibits which have been stored in the basement and forgotten for up to 100 years. The hoard is so little known that curator Robert Drake says he wouldn't be surprised if the staff runs into a room it didn't know existed, before it's all over. "There are whole collections, most of the archeological items, for instance, which have been left untouched," he said. "We've never had the space, | the staff, or the equipment nec: essary to put them in order and| repare them for exhibit." 'Church Union Question To Be Answered Today By NEIL LOUTTIT WATERLOO (CP)--The gen-| 'seral council of the United onto, chairman of the United Church of Canada will vote day on the question of poothert fing the Evangelical United Bretheran Church into union with the United Church. It will be the second question of church union put to the 400 cy-makers of the United within three days. Sat- urday the council voted over- whelmingly in favor of seeking union with the Anglican Church. United Church commissioners don't consider the question of union with the EUB as big as the Anglican-United union. If approved by the high court -of the United Church the EUB churches in Canada would be- come United churches. There would be no major change in United Church orders of faith or worship. There are about 10,000 EUB followers in Canada, mostly in Ontario. The parent EUB church in the United States is with thee Methodist hurch which leaves the Cana- dian EUB an orphan, unless ac- tepted by the United Church. ANSWER QUESTION The major question on church anion was answered Saturday when the commissioners ap- proved a resolution committing) the United Church to negotiate @ union with the Anglicans. The motion read: "This gen- eral council approves the prin- ciples of union between the United Church and the Angli-| wren Church as a working docu-| t in negoitating union with the Anglican Church. Howse, former moderator of the United Church, said designing new or- ders of bishops and presbyters will be the most difficult point in reaching a union. In other sessions of the coun- cil Saturday, commissioners heard reports from the boards of evangelism and social serv- ice calling for legalized thera-| © peutic abortion, widening grounds for divorce and amend- ing the Criminal Code with re- spect to birth control. The report criticized the "'air of guilt" surrounding abortions, which it said often led women to seek' illegal abortions.
