(CP)--A five - year effort to produce seedlings from Nova Scotia's only two. American chestnut trees has finally borne fruit. The greenhouse of the federal | department of agriculture re- | search station here contains 15 seedlings carefully grown from 25 nuts harvested last fall from the two trees. All earlier attempts to obtain healthy nuts from either of the trees had failed. One of the trees is in Bridgewater and the other in Hants County, 150 miles away. The work of cross-pollination of the trees, as well as collec- tion and testing of the nuts was done by George S. Swain, re- search horticulturist at Kent- ville. During the growing season of 1965, Mr. Swain made seven | trips to the trees, collecting | pollen from one and applying it to the other. Until last year the work had negative results. Last fall, how- ever, 25 nuts were collected from tie Bridgewater tree These were planted in the hot- house in January and February, with 15 germinating into seed- lings. The attempt to reproduce the American chestnut tree is of keen interest to horticulturists. The species was once of great economic importance in many areas of the United States, but in recent years has been se- riously affected by blight. The two Nova Scotia trees, probably @s a result of their isolation, had not: been affected. If seedlings from the artificial cross-pollination can be ob- tained on a large scale they could become the founding stock for commercial plantings of the American chestnut. The tree not only provides edible chestnuts of excellent quality but its timber is renowned for furniture.
