Great Canadian Writing Anthology For Centennial By THE CANADIAN PRESS Great Canadian Writing is the literary anthology in the series of commemorative beoks published for the Cen- tennial by McClelland and Stewart and Weekend Maga- zine. Like. its predecessors, it is handsomely got up, by Frank . Newfeld. the prize-winning de- simner, and adited by an emi. nent Canadian. Dr. Ciaude Bissell, president of the Uni- versity of Toronto. And, even more than the others, it is a gad disappointment. The book is a collection of 149 fragments from 89 aw. thors, ranging from Goldwin Smith te Marshal Mcliuhan and what Sir John A. said in Parliament and some modern poems. The champion contributor is E. J. Pratt, the poet, with seven items. Others with four er more are Prof. Northrop Frye, A. M. Klein, Stephen Leacock, Sir John A. Mac- donald, Hugh MacLennan, Frank Underhill, Mordecai Richler, Goldwin Smith and Ethel Wilson. But what is most noticeably scandalous is that, of the 149 items, only four represent French Canada--or five, if you count Louis Riel's Sneek mame wees vy which ween English. A good deal "of ordi- nary writing could have been thrown out im order to include a fair sample of Canadian literature in French. Then, when considering how meueh in the hank is not really "great Canadian writing," one begins to notice who is miss- ing: Joseph Howe and Thomas Chandler Haliburton, for instance. There is nothing by D'Arcy McGee, Henri Bourassa, Rob- ert Service, Sir Thomas Cha- pais or George Woodcock. No by Emile Nelligan, Alain Grandbois (French Can- ada's greatest poet, accord- ing to an earlier volume in the series), Eli Mandel or R. A. D. Ford. Nothing by B. EK. Sandwell, Marie-Claire Blais, D. J. Goodspeed or Canon Lionel Groulx. Food . « « Glerious Feed Clarke Irwim and Co. Lid. is a practical coekbook. Stig Wennerstrom's 15 years of espionage for the Soviet Un- jon while working im high posts for his government in Moscow, Washington and Stockholm. Whiteside's book .i¢ much more fascinating tham the usual rum of spy stories--fact er ficti use it is so authoritative. The author sticks to the transcript of Wennerstrom's pre-trial inter- rogation, or at least the un- censored portions, and when he does speculate he says so, but with informed opinion and quotes. Whiteside says Wenner- strom pulled off at least one coup when he obtained all the technical data on the Bo- mare and Falcon missiles, both of which are in Canadian Air Defence Command. Wennerstrom was ac- credited to Canada as a mili- tary attache when he was attache in Washington. He says he visited all kinds of air squadrons and defence plants in Canada and the U.S. and there appears to be no reason te doubt this. He dis- bursed bribes here and there to get defence plans.
