The exterior decorators came from Montreal parks department recreation § cen- tres across the island one day im August, lured by the invit- ing plywood "canvasses," the prospect of all the paint they could splash and the promise fence contest originated with Du Pont of Canada, which supplied six colors plus black and white in water-washable paint. This type of paint was used because it could be washed out of hair, clothes and finger- nails of the youngsters. How- ever, it can't be washed off the fence and the master- pieces will remain there until TEEN - AGE REMBRANDTS November. The reason for the plywood fence surrounding Place des Arts is that landscaping has not yet been completed. Professional artists have painted fences in other cities, "but teen-agers are easier to handle,"'-a Du Pont spokes- man said. The teen-age angle caught the imagination of the Place des Arts management which gave approval for the treat- ment, of the parks depart- ment which runs regular they might also get the royal treatment. But they have another motive as well.. The ritual inaugurates grade nine students to the school painting classes and excur- sions for teen-age girls, of the city which closed off a side street for part of the day, and of hundreds of tourists and passersby.
