DISCOTHEQUE STARTS NEW TREND Green Door Makes Its Debut Reena w DEANNA BULDYKE KNOCKS ON DOOR OF HER NEW COFFEE HOUSE ase * cater Sunk Into Interior Decorations Alone --Oshawa Times Photo By rg LEBLANC, JR., f The Times Staff isin coffee house struc- ture is a swrey iaiier waaay and any future fioors might have to be built as underground additions. The newborn Green Door dis- cotheque coffee house in Osh- awa is appearing as a ceiling over most dark, dingy and ven- erable-looking outlets for poetry readings, jazz, folk singing and even freedom fighting. And the builder is 26-year-old Deanna Buldyke who opened the King St. E. house four weeks ago Friday after sinking $5,000 into interior decorat- ing. As a new society of 'in' peo- ple is gathering to hear the freshest musical sounds in the city, the Green Door's creator is fighting for the financial life of her cultural investment. It could survive -because a clique of musicians and folk lore adherents are treating the establishment as a new-found and modern podium for their works. UPHILL FIGHT Just the fact that it costs $190 a month in rent for the Green Door premises makes Deanna's adventure in business} an uphill struggle. In the large-} ly skimp-along world of coffee housing a rent like that would be a sure incentive to folding with the first night's take. Public curiosity, combined} with luck, have to date saved | the Green Door from any aval-| anche to failure from its lofty perch in. the coffee house realm. As it has caught on to a degree now, the Green Door hinges might soon need oiling if Deanna can complete her wish to "encourage local tal- ent to. see me." The clique that has already heard her call is comprised of a jazz trio known as Smudge, Scrake and a Friend (with a Ramsey Lewis sound); a deep- thought folk singer; Bob Cun- ningham of Oshawa, and an un- named folk duet from Toronto. And more musically inclined unknowns are bound to join the list-as the tempo of the cof- fee house picks up. Mother and daughter have unconsciously created a like- able parental aura at the club where in the course of a week few stage acts are adolescent -- like discotheque. _A-go-go, Deanna says, is used mainly to lure a set of people still young enough to adopt a new policy on music listening. They could get this if they tuned in on a night of live (and by no means crude) folk singing and jazz jam sessions. Aside from attempting to in- ject some culture into the city, tall and shapely Deanna has selfish motives behind the Green Door, or so she says. MOTORCYCLES She tried finding the gates | of success in Toronto with an import, export firm born last year. As part-owner, secretary- treasurer and bookkeeper of the company, she hasn't done a thing for it in two months. » "We bought about 30 motor- g gt TALENTED FOLK, MUSICIANS FIND NEW PODIUM FOR WORKS ..- New Society of "In" People Like The Atmosphere DEANNA EXPLAINS A POINT ~~ Local Talent Encouraged ~--Oshavia Times Photo --Oshawa Times Photo James Cavell Writes Novel HOLLYWOOD (AP)--~in 1961 when the screen writers went on strike, a few rash souls pre- dicted a bonus for American literature, "At last those high- paid writers will get around to that novel they're always talk- ing about,"' they said. As far as she knows the company is still hobbling along. ON RIVIERA Her discotheque coffee house idea was an offshot of both the company fiasco and a French Riviera tour during a Euro- |pe an trip in 1964. | "It was on the Riviera that il saw my first discotheque. _[Mos are very dark places," jsays Deanna When the Toronto firm {flopped she saw the light and integrated her tastes for jazz land folk singing with the large- ly posh atmosphere of Riviera |dise otheques and launched into jthe coffee house business. facelift- ing an almost century-old three- storey home on King St. E., not far from the King and Mary St: . intersection, reflects on how intent she is on mak- ing the Green Door an original | going-concern here. | So far the takes at the dvor | jand light snack and coffee| sales have brought the Green Door $200 and sometimes more than $300 a week in the last month But. operational. expenses are neighborhood of $200 in the weekly.
