Viet Rats Face War SAIGON (Reuters)--The South Vietnamese government has de- clared war on rats in the fertile Mekong Delta, where most of the country's food is grown. Rats' tails piled into mounds as high as small haystacks are being displayed by farmers as "war" trophies. The ministry of agriculture launched the anti - rodent cam- paign after farmers orted swarms of rats feasting on their Thousands of huge rats invaded the seedling nurseries before the rainy sea- son, the farmers said. In some areas of the battle- scarred delta region, rodents are reported to have caused more damage than the war with the Viet Cong. In one province, on the Cambodian border, they have accounted for up to 30 per cent of annual crop losses. In a single week, the farmers of Kien Tuong province killed 3,000 monster rats, cutting off their tails as trophies. They used American-supplied rodenticides and traps made of wire netting and bamboo, often with crabs as bait. Particia and Barbara and three] brothers, Dennis, Michael and! Robert.
