@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, October 11, 1966 Joe Piontek's Homer Wins Third Game 1-0, All-Ontario Oshawa Gale's Lumber em- ployed the valuable combina- tion of stellar pitching and the home-run blow, to capture the OASA Senior 'B' championship, up in Sault Ste. Marie, over the holiday weekend, eking out a 1-0 victory in the third and de- ciding game of the All-Ontario playoff. OME. RUNS POPULAR Ron Taylor pitched a two- hitter and his mates pounded "So0" pitcher Reg Thomas for nine solid hits, four of them home-runs, for a well-earned 6-0 shutout, in the series opener, on Saturday afternoon. * Sault Ste. Marie evened up the championship round on Sun- day afternoon when Clay Alli- notte set the Oshawa squad down with only three hits, for a 5-2 decision. The homesters had nine hits off Reg White in this game, two of them circuit clouts. The crucial third game, played late Sunday afternoon, Home Rur Defeats Scugogs Oshawa Scugog Cleaners loa-| ded the bases in the 9th inning, | with nobody out and then failed) to get a runner across the plate -- and it cost them the Ontario Junior 'A' softball champion- ship. Playing the third and decid- ing game of the All-Ontario fina in Hamilton on Saturday after- noon, Scugog Cleaners lost a heart - breaking 1-0 decision when Bob Hodges, first batter in the bottom of te 10th inning, smashed a hard drive into right- centre, to give Niagara - On-) The - Lake McRae's Plumbing,| the OASA crown. it C -- -- hamns - See ee -- got Sault Ste. The Lumbermen got a lot of mileage from their hits, the four homers accounting for all six runs. Jim Rowden's hard smash to open the fourth inning, was the first run of the. game, after Gale's had. threatened in the third when Taylor was safe on an outfielder's bobble and Pion- tek followed with a single. Bob Young made it 2-0 with his homer in the sixth. Bowden then drew a walk and Jack MacDermaid doubled, but both were left stranded. In the seventh, with two out, |Piontek was safe on Julie Rus- \siani's error and Lloyd Mapes followed with his H.R. contribu- tion, to make it 4-0. proved a thrill-packed climax to the exciting series, when Oshawa's playing - coach Joe Piontek, hit the second pitch delivered by Clay Alinotte for a home-run smash and Ron Taylor came up with another shutout performance, to make the lone tally stand up, for the game and the provincial crown. OSHAWA BATS BOOM In scoring their 6-0 shutout, in the first of the series, Gale's Lumber put in their most im- pressive game of the season, at the plate, with Ron Taylor add- ing one of his better mound displays, to make the win con- clusive. Taylor struck out 10 batters and issued just one walk. Reg Thomas had the same statistics here, with 10 strikeouts and only one walk. But there was a difference in hits! ALLINOTTE STOPS GALE'S Clay Allinotte, a left-hander with blazing speed and good assortment, proved Sauii Ste. Marie's capable answer to Osh- awa's big bats, when he evened up the series Sunday afternoon, with a 5-2 verdict. He got off to a shaky start but that was all. He hit Joe Pion- tek with a pitched ball, then walked Lloyd Mapes. A couple of stolen bases, a passeu ball and Jim Rowden's single, made it 2-0 for Gale's, with only one out in the first inning --but then Allinotte found the range. Neudorf fanned Dennis Bennett to end the inning. Scugog Cleaners had only one chance and it was a good one. In dethroning the defending champions, Brooklin repeated what they had accomplished in 1964. Capreol were the Inter- mediate 'C' champions in 1957, °59, 60, 61, 63 and 1965. It was the third title-triumph for Brooklin, they having won the crown first in 1955. HITS ARE SCARCE Rival batters found that hits were hard to come by, in the first game Saturday night in Brooklin, as Ron Jones pitched a three-hitter for the home- sters while Ezio Bevilacqua 'al- lowed the homesters only four hits. Bevilacqua claimed 10 strike- outs and issued three walks while Jones struck out eight batters but didn't give up a single way. ' Capreol's lone run, unearned, came in the fourth inning when Tony Bevilacqua, first batter, was hit by a pitched ball. Gil Benoit sacrificed him to sec- ond, Norm Giroux grounded out and then an error throw to third saw the ball go out of bounds, allowing Bevilacqua to score. Glen Till walked in the bot- tom of the fourth and Garnet Warriner singled but Brooklin had to wait until the sixth in- ning, before they dented the Capreol defense. With one out, Cornish singled and then stole second base. Till poked a hit into left-field, where it was momentarily bobbled by. Dave Gobbo, permitting Cor- nish to score and Till slid safe- ly into second base. A passed ball let Till move over the third base and he scored on Vern Ferguson's sac- rifice fly to left field, to make it 2:1. There was no further scoring. Jones faced only 16 batters in the last five frames, Tony Bevilacqua getting a single with two out, in the sixth. Brooklin got two runners on in the 8th, after two out, on a ping ig Sook rate ga HEN AIS count and finally a walk and Tom Simpson followed with a towering drive over the left- fielder's head, for a three-run homer. Wad CMalinas anlw ance en #25> hits all told and struck out seven batters. Brooklin got full value for their other two safe- ties, Warriner was struck by a pitched ball, with one out, in the 8th. Tom Simpson followed with his second hit of the game, a single and later went to sec- ond unmolested. Don Ferguson popped up but Elmo Gibson's hit into short right-field scored Warriner and Simpson, to make it 5-1 and clinch the victory. Capreol nicked Doug Scott for a total of six hits but he kept them well scattered. Gil Benoit singled with two out in the sixth and advanced on~a passed ball, then. scored when Norm Giroux drilled a_ single to the outfield. The visitors appeared to have found the range on _ Scoit's slants as they pumped in two more hits in the seventh, an opening single by Aurel La- valle and a one-out single by pinch-hitter Dave Gobbo. At >this point, manager Bill Harper elected to make a change, bringing in Ron Jones to pitch, with Bruce Mitchell as his battery-mate and Scott's catcher, Bill Cornish, return- ing to his usual infield berth, at second base. Jones got Phil DelPappa to pop up to the infield and Stu Thomas flied out to centre, end- ing the inning. SPORTSCOPE j .
