Dr. F. A. Jaffe, a Toronto pathologist with a long back ground in criminal investiga- tion, also told the court's hear- ing of the Steven Truscott case that he believes Lynne Harpet, the 12-year-old victim in the 1959 slaying for which Truscott was convicted, died between 24 and 48 hours before an autopsy was begun. His opinion on the general time of death coincided closely with that expressed Friday by another defence witness, Dr. Charles Petty of Baltimore, as- sistant medical examiner for, the state of Maryland. A key factor in the original Truscott trial was the Crown's contention that Lynne was strangled to death between 7 p.m. and. 7:45 p.m. June 9--a period during which she had been seen in the company of Truscott, then a 14-year-old boy. HEARING NEW EVIDENCE ) an cedented review a oe dence in the case at cabinet rection. Dr. Petty, who studied the autopsy report and two dozen photographs of the girl's body, estimated she died 36 to 40 hours prior to the start of the autopsy that took place in the early evening of June 11. This would put the time of death later than Truscott's re- turn to his home on the night the Crown says she died--per- haps as late as the early hours of the following morning. Dr. Jaffe, who lectures in pa- thology at the University $f Toronto and is the regional pa- thologist for the provincial. po- lice, said he believed death oc- curred 24 to 48 hours before the autopsy--probably 36 hours, ; COMPLETES TESTIMONY Dr. Petty, who completed his testimony today before Dr. Jaffe took the stand, agreed with Crown lawyers that food empties from a human stomach in two hours under normal lt cumstances. But he added that the diate stances in this ease were not normal. The Crown contends that Lynne was dead within twe hours after her last known meal, eaten at 5:45 p.m. June iy. Navy League Seeks Unification Probe » OTTAWA (CP) -- The Navy League of Canada has calléd for a full-scale independent in- © iquiry into Defence Minister h | Hellyer's program of integrat- } | ing and unifying the defence de- partment. In a brief sent to all MPs |and senators, the league said f ithat pending the inquiry no changes should be made that will affect the separate identity e |of the Canadian navy. § The brief was prepared by a committee within the league © |which studied the maritime = |component of the armed forces. = {It was endorsed by the league's national council at its annual * | meeting in Winnipeg last month. It says that if Canada is fo have an effective maritime force, it should be separate from other branches of the armed forces. " GE ESS Jell- 0 Atst'd Flavours DEALING YOUR - CAR ?
