Shocked by recent surveys which indicate close to 40 per cent of all cars on the road have one or more unsafe tires, the Rubber Association of Can- ada today announced start of a "massive information pro- gram" to overcome public apathy about the safety hazards of improperly maintained tires. George F. Plummer of Whitby, vice-president of the Rubber Association of Canada, told the. Automotive Retailers »Association of B.C, convention that the campaign will be spearheaded by a $25,000 grant to the Canadian Highway Safe- ty Council. "This will be supplemented by literally hundreds of thous- ands of dollars by individual tire manufacturers in advertis- ing, public relations and display projects," Mr. Plummer said. Under attack because of con- fusion among motorists regard-| - ing tire standards, the manu- facturers are responding to criticism and suggestiogs made last May at the annual meet- ing of the Canadian Highway Safety Council in Calgary. Plummer, who is president of Dunlop Canada Limited, promised that the industry would clarify misconceptions motorists have about two-ply, four-ply, and other quality stan- dards about tires. ESSENTIAL PRODUCT "While a tire may lack gla- mor, it ig one of the most essential products in this trans- portation - oriented economy," he said. "Today's tire is measured in tens of thousands of miles and, as drivers, we put tires through punishment that is almost un- sr in its severity," he said.
