MOLNER, MD +-Dear Dr. Moiner: What are some simple signs of mental deterioration or illness? (I know that when someone starts talk- ing about being fed ground glass it is time for action.) The woman I have in mind has a sort of persecution com- plex. She interprets anything said to her as an_ intentional personal insult, She has always been touchy and a bit quarrel- some but she is getting worse. Is it just a problem of old age intensifying her normal con- dition or is it a danger signal? She is 75, -- F.A. Mental deterioration is diffi- cult to.define because it usually develops little by little and with- out sudden lines of demarca- tion. Besides that, we must (or we must try to) distinguish between true mental or emotional illness, and the results of physical aging, Such as an unrecognized stroke that slurs speech. quarrel, This can be natural, or it can progress because there is truly some mental failure. Older folks can be forgetful, remembering clearly what hap- pened 30 years ago but unable to remember yesterday. They may become sloveniy in per- sonal habits, at least partly be- cause they're old and tired, They can vecume inawiy Goosy if they have a tendency in that direction, ODDNESSES APPARENT It is well to remember the old Quaker who told his wife that 'everyone is a little strange except me and thee--and some- times I think thee to be odd," We all have our oddnesses. So perhaps it is well to think in terms of one definition of mental illness--being "desocial- ized," or unable to get along in society. It is a matter of degree, When an older person dis- |plays any of the difficult phases iI listed, medical .adyice is For a start, though, mental/needed. Anxieties (if over illness can be signalled by un-/health) may also be real, There due anxiety; threats of self- destruction; persecution com- plexes; undue introspection (being touchy and quarrelsome periods of profound depression, All these have to-be properly evaluated to mean anything. Is the anxiety based on some gen- uine cause? How much is '"'un- due?" BRAIN IMPAIRED Circulation to the brain may be impaired by-hardening of the arteries, Here again the degree is important, and aitgcult to gauge. Earlier habits can become intensified with age --- as the touchiness and readiness to are drugs that offset depression and in that way make a persor more alert, (If there are threat: of self-destruction, never dis- regard them.) Pay attention to nutrition of older persons, and since they are often fussy eaters, vitamir supplements may be prescribed While you can't stop. the march of old age, you can often help a great deal, Dear Dr. Molner: A friend who is going to have a baby was told by her doctor that it would be a boy because of the strength of the baby's heart beat. An other friend said there is.no way to be certain of the BRIDGE | By B. JAY BECKER (Top record-holder in Mav Individual Championship Play) South dealer Both sides vulnerable, Opening lead + two of hearts, Biles imarly par ae oe | ee 2 uring the' bidding of durin the defensive play, you seni certain messages to partner and also receive certain messages from him. If you or your part- ner slip up in sending or re- ceiving the messages properly, something is wrong with your partnership and your code of communication is in need of. repair, ry Sometimes the message to be sent must be very carefully transmitted, lest there be a misinterpretation by the re- ceiver, Here is a somewhat delicate case where the defense failed because of a breakdown in communication, West led a heart against four spades doubled, Declarer play- ed low from dummy and took East's nine with the ace. When South now played the jack of spades, West discarded a dia- mond and East won the jack with the queen, East was anxious to get a heart ruff and therefore play- ed a club to his partner's ace at trick three, But West mis- interpreted the play and retur+ ned a club, thinking bis part- ner had a singleton in that suit, As a result of this mis- understanding, South made four spades doubled. It is hard to blame West for returning a club, It seemed to him that East was far more likely to have a singleton club than a singleton heart. East could have saved the situation by' returning the jack of diamonds at trick three in- stead of a club. Declarer would ruff it in dummy and lead a low spade which East would take with the ace, But when East now played-a club to the ace, West would easily have been able to deduce that the club was not a single ton because East would have led it much earlier if it were, West would therefore have been forced to return a heart, and this return would have de- feated the contract one trick. The right message, properly sent, would have done the job, Gas Furnaces Draw Praise New heating units must be able to do more than just heat a home! The old concept of having a furnace only to keep you warm is giving way to com: plete comfort the year round, A good furnace, for example, must be able to 'adapt' to summer air conditioning with a minimum of added expense. Then, too, a wide variety of other climate control features -|}may be added to do more than provide just temperature con- -jtrol, Electronic air cleaning, odor - removal and humidity control are a few of the extra jobs being given to the familiar furnace, How well you "treat" the air depends upon the optional equipment you add, It is be« coming popular today to have summer cooling, electronic air cleaning, electric humidifiers and odor-removal, in addition to heating. Most of these accessories do not take up one square foot of indoor space, Modern furnaces are compact. One of the indus- try's newest gas-fired '"'high- "~|boy" furnaces nas a special blower and blower support which will provide la amounts of air at extremely low sound levels, This is an important consideration since the modern furnace is becoming a "building block" which may be used almost continuously, The first of these particular "highboys," introduced back in 1934, was a wonder in its day -- it could keep home tempera. tures within about three de grees of the thermostat setting. The 'new highboy, with an op- tional "'levelizer," will keep temperatures within 4 of a degree by continuously mod- ulating the furnace's gas flame. It will react to temperature changes of as little as one-tenth of a degree. sex Of an unborn child, Is the doctor right? -- Mrs. B.W. Well, if your friend wants a doy. I hope the doctor is right, and it is sometimes possible to guess right, but most of us also know that occasionally we - get fooled. Dear Dr. Molner: You recom: mend agar for constipation. Where can I buy it?--Mrs. 'L.G, Drug stores usually carry it in various preparations, Psyl- lium seed also is good,
