22A_THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, November 22, 1966 La Leche League Helps Breastfeeding Mothers Last spring a group .of La Leche Leagué was formed in this area for .the purpose of giving personal. help and en- couragemeént to all mothers who are interested in "Good Mother- ing Through Breastfeeding." The group is affiliated with La Leche League International, a non-profit, non-sectarian ~ or- ganization which has over 400 groups -helping 'thousands of womoen ! hroushout the world. tt U.L.0.1. has an Official medi- cal advisory board of doctors who have an active interest in, aida concern for, ail Las; ac- tivities, All material~used has been approved by' them, .as has the League's manual, 'The Womanly. Art of Breastfeéding" and the Newsletter. which -is published bi-monthly, The meetings are held in the homes of various members, the fourth Tuesday of each month. Different' phases of breastfeed- ing are discussed informally. at a series of four meetings. Topics included are: (1) <Ad- vantages of: Breastfeeding to Mother and Baby (2) The Art of Breastfeeding and Overcom- ing Difficulties (3) Baby Ar- rives: The Family and the Breastfed Baby (4) Nutrition and Weaning. Women who are interested in learning more about nursing a baby are always most welcome at the meetings. You need not be .pregnant- or even have a family to attend --if you are interested you are welcome. Those who are pregnant find it most. helpful to start the series before the baby arrives. Mothers with tiny babies are encouraged to bring them to the meetings. A' woman's ability to nurse her baby is helped by associating with other mothers who are doing it -- sharing their experiences, discussing ap- proaches, reading and under- 'standing what it's all about. The group leaders are avail- able for phone calls from 'mothers in need of encourage- ment or practical suggestions of a non-medical nature. Having nursed their own babies, they are dedicated to helping other mothers who are interested in the "Womanly art. of Breast- feeding." The group maintains a free lending library and distributes recent literature and reprints on breastfeeding. The Ajax La ee ae ! SELES SCG RUT have Tine ine books 'on breastfeeding, child care and os al subjects, and hope to be able to add more books aS. the group grows.
