Let the Washington Post's society reporter set the scene: "One tall, statuesque woman with brilliant red hair was dressed in what appeared to be a simple black dress . . . but when the skirt swung open; the woman was seen to be wearing a breathtakingly short miniskirt. "Then one gentleman made disparaging remarks about her daring and the lady's hus- band. tossed a glass of cham- pagne inte his face. This led to a general free - for - ali with the champagne going back and forth between the two men as if they were hav- ing a duel on the spot." The Post reports that as the "insulted lady tried to pull her diminutive husband away from the very tall man he was dousing with champagne, her dangling ear - rings got brok- en." People nearby helped scoop - up the diamonds but she said, The Post reports: "Oh, don't bother with the ear-rings. I've got all the jewelry ia the world." Then they left. STORY DIFFERS However, Lawrence E. Si- mon of New York later iden- tified himself as the husband of the insulted woman and said it didn't really happen that way at all. First, he was throwing whisky -- not champagne -- at a man who now was a for- mer. friend, ee Second, his wife had on round diamond ear - rings-- "she doesn't own any dangling diamond ear-rings."' Third, when she was quoted as telling would-be helpers to leave the diamonds where where they were on the floor, she was really talking about his pinch glasses --'I always carry an extra pair." Simon said he was upset that people -- particularly ia- surance people -- might get the impression his wife cas- ually abandoned diamonds. "She does have a lot of jewelry," he agreed. "But she's not the kind of woman to make a remark like that. It sounds like living hell to an insurance company if some- body throws around jewelry like that." ada, Tn Canada last year the societies distributed well over 197,000 articles of clothing and over 61,000 persons were help- ed, The total cash value of serv- ices amounts to' $568,085.57, ha rea Anticipation Of Special Events Helps Reducer By IDA JEAN KAIN When the incentive to lose weight is heightened by some special forthcoming event, shap- up and slimming down becomes an invigorating chal- lenge.
