Ukrainian Women Keeps Old Traditions Alive As the year draws 'to an end Barvinok members are assess- ing their cultural, religious, financial and recreational en- deavors. Remembering the aims and objects of the asso- ciation, projects and programs were of high calibre and re- ceived the fullhearted support, therefore, fostering. a fine fel- lowship within the group. The work in connection with the children and youth proved one with the most prominence: the annuai Students Day Din- ner, the packing of the gifts for the St. Nicholas Concert; the Communion Breakfast; the VuuMy CVS pravay, VIL ep resentation of a member to the advisory board of the Youth Association, and a donation to the Crippled Children. The re- cital of the students on Moth- er's Day who attended the folk dance classes reflected the de- termined progress of its par- ticipants. The program com- mottee held several evenings St. Mary's CWL Donates Money To Vanier Institute St. Mary of the People's Cath- olic Women's League holds its meetings the first Monday of each month. The Reverend Nor- bert Gignac is spiritual di- rector, Mrs. Leonard Weeks, president; Mrs. Kenneth John- son, ist vice-president; . Mrs. Leo McCarthy, treasurer and Mrs. Richard Gabriel, secre- tary. The year's activities consist- ed of an annual night of cards in March, catering to the Osh- awa Catholic High School grad- uation tea, two banquets, the holding of two rummage sales and one bake sale. A fashion show was held in September to raise money for the scholarship fund. The members donated to the Vanier Institute on Family Life, the national centennial project of the CWI. The social welfare convener, Mrs. Maxwell Coleman, and her committee visited Hillsdale Manor each month throughout the year. The annual bazaar is held in November and a pot-luck sup- er and Christmas party in December. where members listened to re- cordings of sex education for the children and participated in discussions. To aid the financing of the projects assumed, several rum- mage sales, a bazaar, social evenings, bale 'sales and a spring frolic were held, Cater- ing to the St. John's Ukrain- ian Orthodox Parish Post East- er dinner. and to several city groups proved the culinary tal- ents of the members. From the cultural aspect the works of the authors Shevenko and Lesia Ukrainka as well as informative articles from the muoniniy Fromin were frequent- ly heard. A film titled the Treasures of the Ukraine was presented at a winter tea. The art of decorating eggs was fea- tured prior to Easter. The dis- tribution of blessed Easter foods to the patients at the hos- pital and Old Age Home brought a rewarding experience to the committee in charge. As in other years a doll dress- ed in the Ukrainian national costume was donated to Osh- awa Hospital Auxiliary. Men's night and an evening of bowling brought the hus- bands of the members out for a joint evening of relaxation. A florist demonstrated the art of flower arranging and Christmas decorations. As the national welfare chair- man is a member of Barvinok a similar office was added to the local executive and a par- cel of clothing was sent to Ukrainian settlers in Brazil. The honor of hosting to the Easter Canada Convention of the Association was the high- light of the year. Since its inception nine years ago there has been a continual round of achieve- ments in Barvinok which has proved- in great satisfaction both to the organization and to the membership.
