AND ALONG COME THING WE KNOW, WE'RE FIRST USE YOUR HEALTH Half Brain ieee Patient Recovers By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD A patient with half of the upper part of his brain removed has upset some previously held beliefs. Surgeons at the Omaha VA hospital had to remove the left part of his brain, a segment five inches across, because of a tumor, Such an operation' is quite a feat to begin with, although it has been done before. The striking thing is that the patient is able to do so many things that Supposedly he could not do--he talks well, uses a telephone, walks (with a cane; phlebitis kept him in bed longer than otherwise would have been necessary), plays checkers, prints, recognizes colors ' and other such things. --_. The prior belief had been that removal of so much left-side brain tissue would hopelessly handicap the right side of his body, and especially interfere with speech. PATIENT SPEAKS Well, such massive removal of brain tissue obviously does a lot of damage, but this patient spoke a few words soon after the operation was completed. | He had trouble at times when) he couldn't summon the exact word he wanted to use, and the report goes that he did some fluent cussing when that hap- pened. Since then his word- power has been returning, and he makes out very well with |read this column will ever have direct interest in it. However, jit occurs to me that this is of jpotential importance to millions who may someday have a stroke, or have a member of \the family affected by one. |VICTIMS GIVE UP | There is no way to undo com- jpletely the damage of a severe |stroke, but experts in rehabili- tation keep telling us that too many stroke victims give up tod quickly. They find themselves paralysed to some degree, and think that nothing at all can be done. The truth is that if some movement remains, improve- ment is usually possible. There are many cases of a hand being extremely weak after a stroke. Steady practise (such as squeez- ing a rubber ball, or lifting very small weights, then increasing the size) brings increased use- fulness. for other parts of the brain to take over functions which have been controlled by a part now damaged. I do not want to minimize in any way the seriousness of strokes, but we know that a good deal of improvement is possible when a patient is told that patience and persistence will pay off, and the experience of this man in Omaha becomes, I think, a striking example of In some cases it is possible} SOUTH KQs Kis AKI83 72 et fee mt tae 9 _ Pass ay : Opening' lead--two of hearts, Your first goal as declarer is" to make the contract, Some-. times you have to go to seem-* ingly ridiculous lengths to nail. down a contract, but, 'when- these special efforts pay 'off,' you have a right to feel well. rewarded. $ Examine this case, where» South is declarer at four no-» trump and West leads 'a heart. . East takes it with the ace and~ returns the nine, Soyth winning? with the jack. g " South leads a club, West fol- + lowing with the eight, and he must now invoke a safety play to assure the contract. 2 First let's suppose he makes the normal safety play of finess- ing the jack. He does not mind losing to the queen, which as- sures him of six club tricks and the contract. In fact, by playing this way, he makes seven club tricks if the finesse wins and East follows suit. But observe what happens in the actual deal when South fi- nesses the jack. East shows out and South must now go down at least one, The "safety play" of finessing the jack of clubs turns out to be a mirage when the suit divides 4-0. Peculiarly enough, South 'can make the contract by invoking a super-safety play. When West plays the eight on the first club" lead, South should let him win. it, thus assuring himself of six: club tricks st any and all" possible distributions, This ex-» traordinary play pays excep- tionally good dividends in the. actual case and South winds up with ten easy tricks, Note that West can make matters more difficult by plays ing the queen when the first club is led by South. Declarer might instinctively take the queen with the king on the basis that it is a singleton, but if he stops to consider the matter carefully, he should conclude that the super-safety play of ducking the queen is best. Tommy Helms Wins Award NEW YORK (AP)--Tommy Helms of Cincinnati Reds, a' shortstop in the minors, a sec- ond baseman in the spring and a third baseman in the sum- mer, has been named National. League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers' Associa: tion of America. A 20-man committee, com» posed of two writers from each National League city, gave Helms 12 votes. Sonny Jackson, Houston Ase. tros' shortstop, was second with three votes, followed by Tite Fuentes, San Francisco Giants' shortstop, with two votes. The remaining votes were divided among Cleon Jone, New York Mets' centre fielder; Randy Hundley, Chicago Cubs' catcher, and Larry Jaster, St, « Louis Cardinals pitcher. The American League Rookie of the Year, named Wednes- day, was Tommie Agee, Chi- cago White Sox centre fielder. Helms, a 25-year-old rookie from Charlotte, N.C., hit .284 jwith 23 doubles, one triple and nine homers. included among his 154 hits. He drove in 49 runs and stole three bases.
