Even more appealing is some of the heather brought to Nova Scotia centuries ago by the high- land settlers. These are the old Scottish songs that Johnny is busy collecting and adding to a repertoire which now numbers close to 175. Treat Awaits Bach Lovers The Orpheus Choir of Toronto, under its director John Sidg- wick, offers a rare opportunity for lovers of Bach on Dec. 28th at 8:00 p.m. -- a professional performance of the 'Christmas Oratorio" with full orchestra and an outstanding quartet of soloists. Wilfred Brown, tenor, one of England's leading Evan- gelists, comes from London to make his North American debut on this occasion. A pupil of the famed Eric Greene, in fifteen years as a professional singer Mr. Brown has sung the Evan- gelist in Bach's Passions two hundred and forty times -- an experience unobtainable for any local Canadian tenor -- and his sensitive performance of these roles has brought him acclaim all over the British Isles. Other soloists include Jean- ette Zarou, soprano, winner of the CBC's 1966 Talent Festival and star of Healey Willan's opera "'Deirde", who will be making her debut in oratorio this Christmas; Marilyn Duffus, contralto, another rising young singer who has studied exten- sively in Germany in a Canada Council grant, and baritone Jan Simons, well-known oratorio singer from Montreal. e sivee credit for his Canadian success to the encouragement given him by the people of Ed- monton and nearby St. Albert where he resided for seven WUrer THERE'S' SMOKE Special effects man Jose Fyre, assigned to Universal's "Privilege," has a very appro- years. priate job. mam) ee tS and Trim Shop for the | mas decorating needs. @ Decorated candle tab! ers @ Table centres @ Unusual fancy balls @ In- door and outdoor lights ping @ Christmas trees ~ RUNDLE'S Garden Centre 1015 King St. E. WHITMAN RUST « °'HANING SESSION QUE" :. Thanks to your formula, # "eded in remov- ing rust stains around the base of the wrought-iron railings in my concrete steps. One thing I neglected to ask in my previous question: How do I prevent more rusting? ANSWER: Be sure that every square millimeter of the iron railings have a coat of paint. First, sand off any loose, flaky rust, then apply a rust-inhibit- ing primer. Follow with a finish made for exposed metal. Main thing: Don't let rain or smog get at bare metal. CASE OF SHRINKING DOORS QUESTION: We recently built a year-round home, using panel doors throughout. @Ve were as- sured they had been properly dried before delivery. However, we find the panels are shrink- ing -~ as much as one quarter inch all around. Our. builder states there is -- insufficient moisture in the house. On his advice, we installed a humidi- fier, which the heating people say is right for our size house. But the situation hasn't been helped. Do you think those doors were properly dried, or did we get doors made of green lum- ber? ANSWER: From your de- scription, it seems to me some- one is kidding about how thor- oughly those doors were dried prior to delivery. Anyone else care to opine? ETCHING OK IN ITS PLACE QUESTION: Accidentally I spilled some cleaner, used for whitening the grout between bathroom floor tiles, in the AILING HOUSE bathtub. According to label, this contains phosphoric acid, which has etched our tub. Is there any- thing which will streaks and roughness? We have already tried sandpaper. How about epoxy paint? ANSWER: Your query about epoxy paint comes closest, in my opinion, to making the best of a bad situation. Nothing can '"un-etch" a porcelain tub. The paint, in a few coats, may par- tially fill out some of the rough- nesses and smooth them a bit, as well as hide the streaks. As for a perfect match. with the tub, it's doubtful. So is the per- manence of the repair. Worth trying --but it's certainly too bad this had to happen at all. KEEP PLANE AWAY QUESTION: The top of my front door ---all solid wood -- sags away from the frame. The frame itself is square. As a re- sult, the bottom outside corner tends to catch on the threshold. Both hinges seem tight and firm. Before I try to make it fit by planing off the corners enough, I'd be pleased to hear if there's anything else I could try first. ANSWER: Don't plane, until all else has failed. It will only result in gaps you'll never be able to fill. Even though the hinges appear tight, the top one may be out too far. Try to pull back the top of the door toward the hinge by cutting a deeper mortise in the frame behind the upper hinge plate. So when you replace the hinge plate, it will be recessed deeper into the frame, and consequently will pull the top of the door toward the apparently remove' the pilex Designs.
