If you cover cost of handling to the CHILD GUIDANCE Parents Foster Early Talking seers. evsing te soune In Infants By By GARRY C. MYERS, PhD Some infants learn to talk earlier than others. Many a youngster develops speech with- out any conscious effort by par- ents to help him do so. Yet, I suppose, every parent, eager to see the child develop, often en- courages him to talk. In some instances, however, excessive. urging by the parent may hinder more than help in this development of speech. By talking thought, parents may speed up the youngster's pro- gress in acquiring speech. All else being equal, the child who from his earliest days enjoys most abundant love and affec- tion learns earliest and fastest to talk. While tender cuddling may be desirable, it may not be the most effective way to give the infant and young child affec- tion. The mother's lovely voice and smiles, her almost constant | talking to him as she cares for| him from his earliest days, weeks, and months, her happy response to his earliest pleas- ant utterances, his coos and other happy sounds, his later babblings, encourage him in more of these expressions, A mother singing lullabies to a child and saying nursery rhymes to him when he is pleased to hear them help him hear a variety of speech sounds. So does her talking to him as | he grows still older--"Now we | put the arm in here; now we) put on the stocking, now the! shoe," and so on. | SHOW APPRECIATION When this youngster utters a | sound the mother supposes is a word, she shows great interest, appreciation and approval of the child. The mother is inclined to say this supposed word after him rendering him: more ready to repeat it. So she may imi-| tate her baby's utterances long | before he imitates hers. He en- | joys repeating sounds of his own which he likes. From there he may begin repeating some} sounds and words of hers. He is very happy as he does this. All a child's early learning | of speech occurs, it seems, | when he feels most comfortable and happy. I've often wondered | whether a baby ever utters his| first new. words when angry or uncomfortable, I doubt that he does. After he says his first few words, he's getting ready to say more when he feels most loved | and comfortable in his mother's | or father's presence. In _ this Stage of speech development the more comfortable and happy | movement he has the more he} feels inclined to communicate His good feelings then prompt VISIT EXPO FREE FREDERICTON (CP)--Lady | Beaverbrook gave a one-week | wish instructions, please Needlework Department of | send self-addressed stamped this newspaper, asking for | | | {long and happy periods of feel-| ting he is loved.
