THE OSHAWA TIMES, 177 Wednesday, March 1, 1967 Peggy Flemming Leads In World Figure Skating VIENNA (CP-AP)--Defending _ champion Peggy Fleming of the United States grabbed the lead as expected but the big sur- prise today was the strong sec- ond place showing of Canada's Valerie Jones as the women's competition got under way in the 1967 world figure skating championships. Miss Fleming, 18, of Colorado Springs, Colo., scored 331.6 points for the first two of a total of six compulsory or school figures. She was a heavy favorite to retain the title. Miss Jones, also 18 is the Canadian senior women's cham- pion. The Toronto girl was sol- idly in the runnerup position with a total of 319.6 points. Third came Sally Ann Staple- ford of Britain with 302.0 points. Gabriele Seyfert of East Ger- many, the 1967 European cham- pion and one of the favorites, was fourth with 301.6 points fol- lowed by Albertina Noyes, the U.S., 301.2 and Czechoslo- vakia's Hana Maskova sixth with 300.8. FIGURES CONTINUE Women's compulsories con- tinue Wednesday with two more figures and will conclude Wed- nesday. Points awarded for the com- pulsories count for 60 per cent of the total score. Twenty-three women took the ice for the singles. Roberta Laurent, another Toronto -18 year-old, was in 11th place with 280.4 points and the other Can- adian girl in the field, Karen Magnussen, 14, of Vancouver was 20th with 255.2 points. Miss Laurent finished third in the Canadian seniors while Miss Magnussen was runner - up to Miss Jones. Miss Fleming established her lead with the first compulsory figure, leading Miss Jones by 7.6 points. Miss Seyfert was in sixth place but worked her way up to fourth in her second fig- ure. Miss Fleming got a total of 169.2 points for the first figure, a counter rocker left, and drew a total of 162.4 points for the second figure -- a paragraph three outward. Miss Jones collected 161.6 ts for the first figure and 58.0 for the second. Build Homes In Woodstock WOODSTOCK (CP) -- The mass-produced, pre - fabricated homes to be built by Aluminum Co. of Canada will be made in Woodstock. Choice of this city for a new $1,000,000 home-assembly plant was announced Monday by Al- can Design Homes Ltd., the subsidiary which will produce them.
