GAMBLE od Cr., Oshawa, Ont, 25-8028 Ss si ich THIS ONTARIO TEAM will compete in the Cen- tennial 'Voyageur' Canoe Pageant and they are shown here, trying out their Saat craft, at the National Yacht Club, in Toronto, and of course, at the same time, toning up their muscles for the big grind, a 3,300-mile race, that starts on May 24 at Rocky Mountain House, near Edmonton, and ends in Montreal, at Expo 67. From _ front-to-rear, . the Centennial Canoe Race Dominion-Wide Event By BRUCE LEVETT Canadian Press Sports Editor Heading into the great out- doors this summer? Well, have a care because the cen- tennial canoe pageant will be abroad in the land. From May 24 at Rocky Mountain House, Alta. to Sept. 1 at Expo, 10 canoes, each with six paddlers, will plunge relentlessly eastward. At stake is honor and glory -- $2,500 for each man in the winning canoe. The payoff for second and third is $2,000 and To win, a team must flail through. sprints and _ time- lapse runs in a manner simi- lar to an automobile rally. Hovering around the canoes like Indians around a wagon train will be a minimum of these safety boats at all times. Just over the horizon will be the support group, a ragged convoy of at least 25 vehicles ranging from three-ton trucks to jeeps, station wagons, campers and trailers. Project officer for this 3,300- mile ramble, which loosely 'retraces the route of the voy- ageurs, is Vic Chapman who was a punter for British Co- lumbia Lions and Edmonton Eskimos before he got into canoeing. FOUR SPARES EACH The canoes will go by train to Rocky Mountain House; the vehicles will be taken over from the army in Edmonton. 'We have lined up 10 three- ton trucks, one for each team," Vie said. "These have benches in the mates. They will be accom- panied along the roads by 15 army vehicles manned by 33 men -- the communications unit. Officials will travel in an assortment of rolling stock. PLENTY TO EAT "We thought about trying to travel in convoy," Chapman says, '"'but we gave up on it-- unless you know how to do it Player Enters Canadian Open MONTREAL (CP) -- Gary Player, one of only four golfers in history to capture all four of golf's major championships, and Bert Yancey, recent winner of the Dallas Open, have entered the $200,000 Canadian Open to be held here June 29-July 2, it was announced Wednesday. Player, from Johannesburg, South Africa, has been in semi- retirement since taking the U.S. Open in 1965 to complete the properly you can get into an unholy mess." On stretches where the trucks cannot reach the ca- noes for an overnight stop-- and there are 20 of these-- the canoes will be self-suffi- cient in the matter of food and shelter. Much of the equipment will be carried in the trucks--a wise decision when you gon- sider the paddlers are ex- pected to consume 30,000 eges, 2% tons of bacon, 60,- 000 pancakes, 10,000 quarts of milk, half a ton of honey, six tons of steak, 24% tons of potatoes, 5,000 loaves of bread and 1% tons of water. And now for a surprise for all you intrepid paddlers--the canoes you thought were go- ing to weigh 300 pounds each have come up 350 pounds. The reason given is that the manu- facturers wanted to make the craft as safe and strong as possible. It may be comforting in the white water, but what about that nine-mile portage? paddlers are: Greg Cown, Chatham; Derek Arbuckle, Toronto; Glen Fallis, Mill- brook and Ed Van Den- Hoek, of Brampton.
