18 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdey, Mey 31, 1967 Mrs, Alesandro Ferace, wife of: Italy's Ambassador to Canada, prepares to cut . a serving of pasticcio of macaroni, a popular Italian dish of meat and macaroni Signora Ferace Anticipates Italy's National Day, June 2 Italy's National Day, June 2, will be celebrated by. several hundred guests invited to the) jners, annual Republic Day reception. Official Ottawa diplomats, top civil servants, and Ottawa friends of Italian Ambassador, Alesandro Ferace and Mrs, Fer- ace will mark the event as Italy's national colors fly proud- ly atop the flagpole on the front lawn of the embassy as well as downtown, at the front entrance of Ottawa's City Hall. "Tf the weather is right, we'll hold the party in the garden," Mrs. Ferace said with a hope- ful smile. A tiny brunette, Maria Luisa Ferace, has flashing dark eyes and a talent for high fashion. She has aquired the skill of adapting to any place or situa- tion at any given moment. Dip- lomacy and adaptability go hand in hand for the wife of Italy's Ambassador to Canada. "J much prefer more formal, sit - down parties where the guests can eat properly and con- duct a conversation without ba- lancing a dinner plate." The spacious embassy dining room, equipped with two tables, seats 20 guests -- a number not too large to prohibit easy min- gling for both hosts and guests, the envoy's wife stated. ITALIAN CHEF Though Mrs, Ferace takes an active part in planning menus at-the embssy, she relies on her Italian chef, Domenico, to implement her ideas for lunch- eons, dinners and receptions, such as the huge Republic Day party. MYERS, PhD Among the disappointments and heartaches of many parents is the absence of expression of gratitude to them by the child who is in his teens or is grown up. Dr. Edgar Dale of Ohio State University devoted an issue of his News Letter to A Sense of Gratitude. He says that grati- tude is perhaps "the noblest of emotions;"' that our youth to- day take for granted their rights to criticize, the government, the college and the church; that while they have this right they may not feel the obligation to keep in mind the great disci- pline and struggle which were required to provide these insti- tutions. "We have no need for sophisticated irresponsibil- ity." Dr. Dale notes that students and parents are taking teachers for granted instead of feeling gratitude to them. He asked several hundred teachers to re- call the words of appreciation they received during the past 3 tablespoons grated parmes- an cheese Boil and drain noodles as dir- ected on package; meantime trim excess fat from chops; |slash remaining fat around ed- ges in several places; brown lamb chops on both sides in lightly greased pan. Remove chops and saute gar- lic, green pepper and onion in drippings in pan; drain excess fat. Add salt, oregano and to- mato sauce; simmer for 10 min- utes. Add cheeses, stir and sim- mer just until melted; thor- oughly combine noodles and sauce, Turn into lightly - greased 9" or 10" square baking pan; arrange chops on top. Bake in pre - heated 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until lamb chops are tender. Serve year. Few of them could think of many examples. He notes that when parents comment only on unfavorable results with their children the teacher's mo- rale slumps. Dr. Dale sees how rarely col- lege students express gratitude to their parents for the sacri- fices they have made for them. However, he warns 'that the parents may too often remind their children of what they owe their parents, what they have done for them. How few chil- dren feel like writing thank-you notes for gifts and hospitality. Dr. Dale's implication is that parents need to find ways to practice their children from their early years in expressions gratitude. This is not easy to 0. SET EXAMPLE It occurred to me while read- ing this news letter that, whereas parents need to set a good example to their children in expressing gratitude to them and to others, they also need to watch themselves lest they do for their children what these youngsters can do for them- selves, that they need to empha- size self-reliance in the child's upbringing. Furthermore, we parents need to curb our inclination to make undue sacrifices for our children. The more we deny ourselves for them, except for their physical and moral wel- fare, the more they expect from us, the more selfish and un- grateful to us or anybody else they become. At Christmas timé and on birthdays, most children seem to get excessive practice in selfishness, Our children may learn un- selfishness and gratitude from seeing us making self-sacrifices for persons other than them- selves. But when our very hot. denials often satisfy their wants WALKER'S OFFERS YOU THIS TREMENDOUS VALUE ON IMPORTED EARTHENWARE SETS!
