J2 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Setendey, June 24, 1967 BIBLE LESSON Intervention By God In Church Persecuton By R. H. RAMSEY Further persecution of the early church and God's inter- vention is the subject of today's lesson. For the first time in the Book of Acts a chapter opens with the name of a high author- ity in the Roman government of Judea--Herod Agrippa I-- who occupied the throne at the time. He was a member of & mon- strous family, grandson of Herod the Great who ordered the slaughter of the innocents of Bethlehem, and nephew of} Herod Antipas who ordered John the Baptist beheaded. By conquest and adoption Herod was a Jew--racially he was an Edomite whose fore- fathers had been conquered by the Jews about 125 years before the birth of Christ and com- pelled to accept circumcision and all other Jewish rites--but he had not one drop of Jewish yiood in his veins. Born in and brought up in the sity of Rome, Herod was a friend of Caligula. This parti- sanship caused Herod to be thrown into prison by Tiberius, but his fortunes improved with ently general knowledge of Her- od's intentions. They gathered the entire church together--at best a few hundred persons-- and began to pray earnestly that God spare this leader. the full meaning of God's plan. James' death must Rhoda, a young serving girl in the household, was sent to answer the door. When she heard Peter's voice she was be- side herself with joy. Instead of admitting him, she left him standing in the street and ran to tell the others. They refused Peter, bound with heavy chains, slept in prison between two soldiers and behind locked doors. Such maximum security meant nothing to God. His an- gel appeared in a bright light within the prison, awakened Peter and bade him make haste to escape. As Peter's chains fell away, the angel commanded him to gird himself, bind on his san- dals, cast a garment about him- self and follow him. Peter did so and they passed through the prison doors, past the guards came to the iron gate leading d of Harmony Road Baptist Church 226 Harmony Rd. S. Minister-Elect -- REV. E. K. ANGEL DEPARTED At first Peter was not sure what he was experiencing was real, but after he and the angel had gone a short distance, the angel disappeared and Peter came to himself and realized aligula's ascension to the throne. Through royal favor he was named king of the Jews and given the tetrarchies of Philip, Lysanias, Galilee and Peraea. \VOIDED OFFENSE | With the Jews Herod Agrippa | was a successful ruler. He deferred to their scruples, ob- served their regulations, and was careful to avoid offense in every respect. This disposition toward and deference to his Tewish subjects at Jerusalem elicited his persecution of the Christians, his beheading of the Apostle James, his imprison- ment of Peter and intention to execute him after the feast of the Passover. Peter's arrest and imprison- ment must have caused great consternation 'among the be- lievers, especially in the light of James' death and the appar- HEAR The Back to the Bible Broadcast DAILY Men. te Set. 9:30 - 10:00 a.m. 1350 RADIO Zion Christian Reformed Church 409 Adelaide Ave. E.
