6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondoy, July 10, 1967 ! SPORTS MENUE By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports GREEN GAELS are. at their regular Monday night stand this evening, Juniors their guests here will widen that game be- tween Oshawa and the Tor- onto Township PCO's, a situa- tion which continues to add interest to the Junior OLA race but one which is not yet dangerous. In recent weeks, Brampton has moved up into fourth place, on the heels of third - place Huntsville and of course Brampton would like to further improve their status with a win over the Green Gaels tonight. With Toronto Township improving steadily and now solidly entrenched in the second slot, the Green: Gaels are in the position where they cannot afford to let up. And then, aside from the point totals in the team standing, there is the matter of individual scoring success. Several members of the Osh- awa team are making a strong run at improving their own private standings, in the point column and if for no other reason, local lacrosse fans can expect plenty of spirited action from Powless, Higgs, Jones, Clayton broth- ers, Stinson, etc., whenever they take the floor. MIXED SUCCESS was en- joyed by our Senior lacrosse teams, in their weekend ac- tion. Brooklin Redmen took a licking on their home floor, second - successive defeat at the hands of the improved Peterborough "Petes." The Redmen gave it a good try but the Liftlock City squad "came to play' -- they were out to bolster their margin as the Senior 'A' group leaders. By now, Coach Fred Whalley and his players must be convinced that the Done Bye "Petes" are determined to make that trip West this autumn, to de- fend The Mann Cup. Here at Civic Auditorium yesterday afternoon, Windsor Clippers gave an excellent account of themselves for the first two periods, then wilted under the steady pressure applied by Lasco Steelers, as the Osh- awa Senior 'B' club romped to a clean-cut win QUALITY FUELS, Osh- awa's strong Midget softball team, advanced to the final of the North York Lorne Ford Midget Tournament, this weekend, when they defeated Kemptville 8-2. This game was a semi-final match of the July 1 tournament which was rained out and the two clubs with Bramp- for a schedule fixture. A win Editor and settle things. The win |means that Oshawa Midgets | will take on Willowdale, later this week, in the final for the |Lorne Ford Tournament tro- |Phy and top prizes. | TOURNAMENTS as a topic reminds us that Oshawa City jand District Softball Associa- 'tion officers and team repre- | sentatives met yesterday afternoon and cleared the decks for action, in their big |annual Junior Softball Tourna- ment, here .at Alexandra Park, this' Saturday. They reached the deadline for en- jtries with Alexander's Furni- |ture team of the East Toronto |Minor Softball Association, being the 16th and final en- try. They make the draw at "high noon" and _ the first eight teams drawn swing into action at 12:30 o'clock and jfrom then on, until the finalists are declared, late in the afternoon or early eve- ning, it's steady action, all keyed to the big final tourna- ment championship final, under the lights, at night. JUST BITS: Dale Talon, finished third in the Ontario Junior District Qualifying | play, at the Peterborough Golf }and Country Club, on Friday. Dale was the Northern On- tario Juvenile champion last | summer, out of Noranda. He | shot a 76, to finish two strokes |behind last year's qualifier {Tim McCutcheon and three behind Greg Hiseler's brilliant round of 73. Hiseler plays out of the host club. These three along with Ron King of Kawartha and Stew Ferguson of PGCC, were the five to qualify. Bruce Welsh of Bow- manville was the top Juvenile with a card of 81 ... JIM LUTTON'S Legionnaires had a rough weekend, coming out jon the short end of both their games, one against Kendal and the other at the hands of the Kingston Seniors, here at the Kinsmen Stadium yester- day afternoon . OSHAWA 'A' MAJORS defeated Port Hope with a squeeze - play bunt, for the winning run, in the 13th inning, at Alexandra |Park -- just before it got too wet to continue... GREEN GAELS completed their exhi- bition jaunt on Saturday with a 20-5 decision over the Caugh- nawaga Indians, in a game played at Lachine, Quebec. As in the previous night at Corn- wall, Merv Marshall was jagain in great form, in the {Oshawa net, with almost lectin member of the squad getting his name in the scor- By CLIFF GORDON Don Bye Petes Saturday night handed the slumping Brooklin Rermen a 17-9 defeat and this time, at the Brooklin Arena. The win moves the Petes out front by seven points in the four - team league with only eight games left. It will be a tough chore for manager - jcoach Fred Whalley and his Hoavehs to catch the fired - up |Peterborough team. Now the |Redmen will need to win two {games against the Petes and jalso some help from some of |the other clubs. BROOKLIN -- Peterborough Petes Humble Redmen On Their Home Floor McCready each scored one for Brooklin, GOALIE SCORES We have not flipped our lid, as many would think, from reading that Bob McCready scored a goal while playing as netminder for Brooklin. Steelers dropped Windsor 17-9, playing a brand of lacrosse that will help offset their poor play Thursday against Owen Sound and prepare them for meetings with Fergus and Brantford, top teams in the league. Ron Moore added three goals Jim Paterson, who is nor- mally known for his hockey |skills, proved to be the key man for the victors as he scored eight goals and assist- ed on two more for a ten - point night.
