The plan, still to be worked out in detail, would add about 2,500,000 Canadians to the un- employment insurance contribu- tor rolls and add about $200,- 000,000 to the fund annually This would permit the rate of maximum benefits to be raised to $65 a week from $36. Labor Minister Nicholson and other ministers have said the government intends to increase benefits and finance them through a new contributory plan. Unemployment insurance in- troduced in 1941, now requires! contributions from all en. ployees earning up to $5,460 a year, with a specified list of exceptions. Employee contribu- tions are matched by employ- ers. Exceptions include employees in hunting and trapping, the armed forces, federal, provin- - cial and local police, domestic * service, teaching, private duty nursing, and employees of char- itable institutions or non - pro- prietory hospitals. Agricultural and horticultural > workers qualified for insurance 'this spring. Underthe new plan as now envisaged, all workers--includ- ing professions and_ self - em- ployed -- would be required. to contribute. Rates of contribu tion would remain the same as Yasin: Kept, Bit Above Knee PARIS (Reuters)--The Chris- tian Dior fashion house today kept hemlines just above the knee at the showing of its fall- winter collection to buyers Buyers said after the show that designer Mare Bohan has made no change in skirt lengths. Street clothes all clear the top of the knee-cap while eve- ning clothes are floor-length. For the first time 'since the House of Dior opened 20 years ago, buyers were admitted be- fore the press. Journalists will see the collec- tion Thursday morning. Trade buyers raved Bohan's new designs. about | Howe Returns To Rescue Kin TORONTO (CP) -- Gordie star of Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League, cancelled a_ speaking engagement Monday night and flew back to Detroit to get his wife and four children out of the riot-torn city. "The rioting is only three miles from our home now," he said in an interview. 'That's too close." He said his wife Colleen hoped to leave their northwest Detroit home as early as possi- ble today. Howe, who was to visit Sul- bury today, said he intends to leave his children at various summer camps in Canada. GETTING AWAY FROM IT | LONDON (AP)--Five British Quaker families hoping to get away from it all plan to buy a tiny island off Scotland's stormy west coast and live there. A spokesman said the group would take up agriculture, make pot- tery for tourists and live a life "more meaningful with fewer) compromises with our prin-; ciples." | to 94 earn- al present, ranging up cents a week for 'workers ing $69 a weck or more. Still to be worked out in de tail, the source indicated, is a plan to adjust the rate of bene fits to the cost of living. This principle was introduced in uni-| versal old age pensions and the] government hopes to extend it to other welfare plans It was reported the cabinet hopes to embody the plan in a bill to be submitted to Parlia ment this fall EVERYDAY Records are set in sports Likewise im Sales and you "Mr, Man" not afford the loss of one Business can- in to- .
