® THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, August 4, 1967 - | ! Tan Thomas | preorermneereronmemns SPORTS BEAT; "4 By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor GREEN GAELS _ turned back Brampton ABC's 17-6 last night, but only after weathering a determined at- tack by the homesters, in the early stages of the game. Using a zone type of de- fensive action, akin to kitty- bar-the-door, the Brampton team struck for the odd open- ing and held Gaels 2-2 in the first period but in the second stanza, Oshawa gradually took over and they won -- as they say in horse racing par- lance -- "going away". The game became quite rough and rugged in the closing stages and suggested that Saturday night's game will be a repeat of the same strategy. Bramp- ton will employ their zone de- fence and try hard to stay on the floor and make a game of it -- to stay in contention. But once, if it happens, the Gaels take a lead large enough to fndicate certain victory, then there are a few of the Bramp- ton boys who will likely in- dulge in some head-hunting. THE PLAYOFF SCENE re- turns to Oshawa on Tuesday night (there's no game this Monday evening, Civic Holi- day) and the game is being played back at the Green Gaels' original] stamping ground, in the Children's Arena. Civic Auditorium had previously been booked for the second week of August. Gaels will play the fourth game of the series in Chil- dren's Arena and if it goes five, they'll also - be "at home" for that one, on Thurs- day night, also at Children's Arena. Incidentally, Oshawa Lasco Steelers called off their second and third games of their Senior 'B' playoff series with Orangeville Dufferins -- postponed them until next week. Second game of that 4-out-of-7 set will be. played either in Children's Arena (most likely) or out at Brook- lin, on Wednesday night. CIVIC HOLIDAY weckend is a "soccer weekend" around these parts. There's a Senior 'a' lacrosse game in Brook- lin Saturday night and that Junior tilt in Brampton. But closer to home, we find Dar- lington Senior League con- tinuing their grim schedule scramble with a couple of key games on Saturday night; there's an exhibition game with Oshawa Napoli perform- ing at the Kinsmen Stadium evening and on Monday evening, in Maple Grove Park, Oshawa Italia takes on the Darlington League All-Stars. on Sunday OSHAWA ITALIA has a big date before that, however -- their Ontario Cup playoff game against Toronto Bally- mena, at Birch mount Sta- dium in Scarborough, tom.or- row evening, at eight o'clock. This is the start of the pro- vincial finals in Ontario Cup play, to be decided on a home- and-home, total-goals series and the return game will be here in Oshawa, next week. Gustav Seide, regular centre- half, playmaker de luxe and strong defender, will be miss- ed from Italia's lineup on Sat- urdav night. He is currently vacationing in the Barbados. Replacing him will be Ger- mano Cucinato, a team regu- lar who has been out follow- ing surgery, but is now fit and ready to go. Johnny Lopes, just back from Bar- badus, who missed the last game, will be at his usual inside-right spot and the rest of the Italia squad will all be there -- with bells on -- we hope! DAVE TALLON didn't win the Ontario Junior Golf Championship play yesterday, Ian Thomas of London did. However, Dave made a good showing, finished in a tie for eighth spot and so is still eligible to bid for a berth on the Ontario Junior team with playoff for that honor being held today. Playing at Markland Wood Country Club this week, in the Cavotti In- vitational Pro-Am: tourna- ment, the Oshawa team of Jeff McGrath, Dune Brodie Hal Butler, made a splendid showing. This team event was a best-ball affair and three teams, from Cedar brae, Board of Trade and Pine Val- ley, finished tied for first with cards of 59 -- 12 strokes be- low par for the Markland course. The Oshawa trio were right on their heels, with a total of only 60 strokes for the 18-hole test. Five years ago, Bob Bradley, McGrath and Butler teamed up to win this event. A total of 80 teams competed in this week's 9th annual and the Cedarbrae trio headed by Ken Duggan, won out, after two extra holes of play. | Wins Title TORONTO (CP)--lan Thomas of London Thursday fired a three-over-par 73 to win the On- tario junior golf championship with a 36-hole total of 147. Playing over the St. George's Golf and Country Club course, Thomas had a four-stroke edge over Pete Lago of Guelph who |put together rounds of 76 and 75 for a 151 total, a stroke ahead of Alex Lockington of Dundas, Ont., and Mac Wilson lof Ingersoll, Ont. | The victory earned Thomas an automatic berth on Ontario's Willingdon Cup team and on the four-man team that will rep- iresent the province in the an- nual Ontario - Quebec matches |set for Aug. 17-18 at the Royal Quebec Golf Club in Boischatel, Que. The three remaining places on the Ontario team for the Canadian championships will be decided today in an 18 - hole match between Thursday's leaders.
