10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdey, August 23, 1967] No Interest By 'UN' Seen VICTORIA (CP)--Manitoba Premier Duff Roblin said Tues- day ke would be surprised if the Quebec Union Nationale party supports his bid for the national Progressive Conserva- tive teadership. + I should be very surprised if the Union Nationale party had any official interest in this campaign," he told a news con- ference. "It's a provincial party and I expect, much like any other' provincial party, it sticks to its own" However, he did say that many individual members of the Union Nationale may sup- port his bid for the leadership. There were reports from Que- bec City Monday that Premier Danie! Johnson's Union Natio- nale, which has in the past sup- porte? Conservatives federally, was on the verge of rallying behizd the Manitoba premier's leadership bid. Mr. Roblin said he also hopes for substantial support from Ontario, adding: "Ic would be most unfortun- ate if any candidate became identified with one region. We have cnough regionalism already What we need is a lit-| tle more Canadianism." He repeated earlier state- ments that the most pressing problems facing Canada today is national unity and the promo- tion of harmonious relations between English-and French- speaking Canadians. Premier Roblin also. said he wants to make his stand clear "on this monarchy business." ."I can see no reason why the constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth as the Queen of Canada, should not be an instrument of national unity. "The monarchy should be above politics, and if it didn't exist we would probably have to invent something like it," he said. Asked if he favored special status for Quebec, Premier Rob'in replied that province has always had special status under the terms of the British North America Act. "The national government must have the power and resources necessary to fill the role of national government," he said. "Once that is secured, we must be as generous as possible and find measures needed to make French - speaking Cana- dians more at ease and more ai home." The premier ended a two-day visit to British Columbia Tues- day night. Cardinal Confident By FRED HAMILTON TORONTO (CP)--A Belgian cardinal Tuesday spoke confi- dently of a Roman Catholic Church 'now on the way to some Vatican III," while a Dutch theologian said a world- wide synod of bishops next month will decide '"'whether the trend of the second Vatican councl! is confirmed or rev- ersed."' Leo-Joseph Cardinal Suenens, Archbishop of Malines-Brussels, was delivering a plenary address to the Congress on the Theology of the Renewal of the Church Dr. Edward Schillebeeckx of| the Catholic University in Nijmegen, Holland, was speak- ing at a press conference dur- ing the congress. ""As the years go on, it will be seen more clearly that this ebuncil was a very fruitful one, and that it pruned back certain shoots only to assure fuller development of the tree," said Cardinal Suens in reference to the second Vatican council. "Speaking in French, the 63- year-vid cardinal discussed the council in relation to the past and to the future. The council, which started the church on the search for renewal, was the soil in which "seeds of life' were planted, he said "Were I asked which of these seeds of life is richest in pastor- al consequences, I should reply: The rediscovery of the peopie of God as a totality, and the co-responsibility that flows as a consequence from it for all the members." Renewal does not mean a return to the past or to restore the church as it was, but "'in continuity with the past, to go forth to meet the Lord and to answer His new invitations." Nixon Hits At Highways PERTH, Ont. (CP)--Ontario Libera' leader Robert Nixon said Tuesday that provincial highways leading into the national capital are "shameful- ly inadequate." "There is a desperate need for a four-lane highway con- necting Ottawa and the major) population centres along the Lake Ontario shoreline, now linked by Highway 401," Mr. Nixon said at a garden party in is hunor. He also attacked the govern- ment for delays in construction of 401 in eastern Ontario, noting that in 1960 Fred Cass, then highways minister, promised the highway would be complet- ARARARRRR ed by 1963.
