Canadian Steel Sales Threatened LONDON (CP)--Canadian steel sales in Britain are threat- ened by pressure from British steelmakers against imports including an appeal for a spe- cial customs penalty against Canadian galvanized sheet steel. Shipments of Canadian sheet steel have been tapering off after raising steeply late in 1966 and early this year, a Canadian informant said Tuesday. The government board of trade is weighing a complaint that Canadian galvanized sheet fe being dumped--sold in Brit- ain at lower prices than in Can- ada--against a reply to the charge submitted privately last week by Steel Co. of Canada. A board ruling in favor of British steelmakers could lead to 'countervailing duties" against the Canadian product-- a special tariff that would effectively raise the price of the galvanized steel from Canada. At the same time, the new state-run British Steel Corp. is counter-attacking against sheet steel imports by offering "'loy- alty rebates" of $4.50 a ton to Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution | Thwarts Unhappy Senators jout a congressional declaration United States' and "to prevent By ROD CURRIE further aggression." With a world steel glut tight- ening competition, imports into Britain are running at a record rate of about 200,000 tons a month. British steel men pre- dict the rate will rise to 300,000 tons a month this fall. Duty-free sheet steel from Canada, Australia, Sweden and Norway has been undercutting the British product by about $6 a ton in the domestic market. The British problem is com- plicated by uncertainty over domestic pricing policies follow- ing nationalization of most of the industry July 28. Sales in Britain of Canadian- coated steel sheets, mostly gal- vanized, jumped to 23,177 tons worth more than $4,400,000 in the first four months of this year from 10,674 tons worth $2,300,000 in the same period last year. The projected autumn import rate of 300,000 tons for steel from all sources would be less than British steel exports. Why does A&P still offer coffees in the bean? Specifically, because we know these facts: The coffee bean is nature's seal that holds the flavour.
