THE OSHAWA TIMES, 7 Wednesday, August 23, 1967 Education Aid Asked PORT ARTHUR (CP)--For the eighth consecutive year the Ontario Municipal Association is urging government financial assistance in the field of educa- tion. The only change in this year's resolution, unanimously approved Tuesday at the asso- ciation's annual convention, is that the municipalities want both the provincial and federal governments to chip in "at least 80 per cent of the cost." Most of the resolutions, and especially the one on education, were underlined by the associa- tion's anxiety to know the con- tents of the Smith committee report on taxation which appar- ently is in the hands of the printers, MEMBER ENDORSEMENT One resolution, not recom- mended by the resolutions com- mittee but endorsed by the membership, calls on the feder- al and provincial governments fo announce within the first three months of the year their plans for winter works. | At its sessions Monday, tha |association waded through 34 af | 122 resolutions up for considera: tion. | Among those adopted were: --An amendment to the Municipal Act to empower a municipality to pasa bylaws prohibiting the accumulation of outside rubbish on private proc erty. | That members of district |. high school boards, except | those appointed by the | county and separate schools | boards, be directly elected | by the voters in the municl- | pality. --That driver education be Included as an elective sub- } ject in high schools. | | | BEQUEST GOES UNUSED. | CINCINNATI (AP )--When | Joanna Peters died 74 years ago she left a bequest of $1,000 jto the city for an "asylum for inebriates."" Now worth $10,000, the bequest is still sitting in a general fund since the city council says "the original pur- pose of the bequest cannot be accomplished."'
