What can be done for these children and where should we turn for help? There seems to be a lack of acceptance, knowledge, advice or training for this problem in my city on the part of both edu- cators and physicians. It is difficult for us to decide what is best for our son, 11, now that the problem is finally diagnosed.--Mrs. F.P. Dyslexia is an inability fo read understandingly or easily. Since the problem has _ been diagnosed, I am surprised that appropriate referral has not been made--you live in a met- ropolitan area that should have suitable facilities, SHOULD KNOW MORE Perhaps if I knew more of the circumstances of this case I could do more to resolve the question. As it is, I must rely on conjecture. Is it possible that you have a diagnosis of dyslexia without yet having had the causes of it analyzed? This is a must. Dyslexia, you see, is not a specific 'disease' for which a specific treatment can be applied. It is, rather, a problem which may be resulting from one of a number of causes, or even from a combination of causes, Study of the case would involve analysis of eyesight, +-6-12--Forest Rangers Dyslexia Treated By Finding Cause By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD of intelligence, and sometimes other tests. Since you specify dyslexia in highly would take it for granted that this boy's IQ has been tested and it is high. Knowing that would limit the possibilities. Is there a physical condition involved? Tests must be made to find out. Or, alternatively, is an emo- tional, neurological or "'men- tal" condition involved? There is no reason why a person of high intelligence cannot develop an emotional illness. It hap- pens. Psychiatric treatment is, therefore, the answer in such a case, SUGGESTS ANALYSIS Either your physician or the school system should be able to make arrangements for further analysis of the boy's problem, and only after that has been done can you or anyone else know what should be done for him. A child guidance center would be one obvious place to go for help in accomplishing such tests, It is possible that a rehabilitation institute might be equipped for a problem such as this. You must not be satisfied to accept a "diagnosis of dyslex- ia," and expect treatment to follow. The cause of the dyslex- ia has to be discovered. Dear Dr. Molner: I am 14. hearing, IQ or other evaluations q intelligent children, I) Let's say you're declarer at \six diamonds and West leads a jheart. After winning with the jack and drawing trumps, you could of course stake every- j thing on a finesse of the queen }of clubs, but this would be a jrelatively poor way of playing \the hand. | A better approach would be ito cash the ace of spades, enter jdummy with a heart, ruff the jqueen of spades, cash the ace jof hearts, and then lead a club from dummy, planning to fin- jesse the seven if East follows low. With hearts and spades elimi- |nated from both hands in prepa- jration for the endply, West Pda be forced to make a favorable return after taking |the seven clubs. | In the actual hand, however, |the method would fail because | East would presumably play |the nine on the club lead from jdummy and you would then go |down regardless of how you | continued, The attempted elimination |play is a step in the right direction, but there is a still better line of play available. What you should do after cashing the ace of spades at trick four is also cash the A-Q of hearts and then lead the queen of spades from dummy. If East follows low, you dis- card a club and make the rest because West is. endplayed, Of course, it may turn out that East has the king of spades insteat of West and covers the queen with the king, but then it has cost you nothing to try the play. The point is that if West has the king of spades the slam is absolutely unbeatable, while if East has it, you still have other strin 't in your bow. Buses For Guyana BURNABY B.C. (CP) -- The first school bus built under Pro- ject 100 has almost been com- pleted for shipment to Guyana, a gift of the school children of British Columbia. Others will follow, to India, Pakistan, Zambia, Hong Kong and Tanzania. They are more than just buses. Described as mobile classrooms, the $15,000 vehicles built by students at the B.C. Vocational School here contain audiovisual teaching aids, scis jence kits and books about B.C, and Canada. In addition the B.C. students are gathering money to give to QUEENIE | "Just think of how much of | the world's greed, avarice and | Pettiness will go unseen by | YOU se." | my hair the first day of my period, but my hair gets very greasy at times and my period is irregular so I can't plan in advance. Our school nurse says it is all right to wash your hair the first day. Do you agree?-- B.C. The nurse is completely right, but the folklore about not wash- ing on the first day (or some say any time during the period) yas been handed down for gen- erations, without a particle of evidence to support the notion. My advice is to wash your hair when it is necessary. And when you have daughters, don't keep the old nonsense going. Let them wash their hair when- ever it needs it. Dear Dr. Molner: If a woman hada disease at the time she was pregnant, would it affect the child's brain as he grew older?--S.H. With so little information from you, all I can say is that some diseases may do so, oth- My mother won't let me wash 5 ers will not.
