6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, September 18, 1967 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor SUMMER SEASON may be getting late but local sports fans would be hard to con- vince and so would those in the nearby area, with Oshawa and district well-represented in various provincial softball and baseball playoff rounds. In baseball, Junior Legion- naires lost the Leaside League title on Sunday when Richard- son's Sports won the third and deciding game 4-3. However, Oshawa Tykes put out Brampton youngsters in two- straight over the weekend, to enter the OBA finals and the Bantam Legionnaires are also in the finals, they'll face Kitchener. THE WEEKEND action saw more Oshawa victories, plus three others for our neighbors. Brooklin Concretes won 6-2 over Battersea to sweep their Intermediate 'C' series and they'll now meet Merlin or Allenford in the Southern On- tario finals. Port Perry had two teams, their Pee Wees ousting East Woodlands to reach the finals and their Midget team tied up the series with MactTier, forcing a third game Wednesday night, at Barrie. And in Junior 'B' OASA finals, Bay Ridges Shells won 8-2 over Hagers- ville, in the first game of the series, played at Pickering. GALE LUMBER will meet Port Colborne in the Senior 'B' Southern finals, having eliminated Toronto Plating in a thrilling 9th-inning finish on Saturday night at Kew Gar- dens to take that series in two- straight. Here at home, Pam Internationals waged a 14- inning battle before Jackie Sneddon poled one over the fence, good for three runs, to break the 3-3 deadlock and eliminated Owen Sound. Pams will meet either Galt or Stoney Creek in their Southern Inter. 'A' finals. Meanwhile, Jaycees will face Woodstock in OASA Juvenile 'A' Southern finals and Scugog Cleaners go against Sarnia. Sarnia ousted Smithville in a 1-0 thriller, on Saturday, in Sarnia. FOURTH GAME of The Mann Cup finals, tonight in Vancouver's Kerris dale Arena, looms as the key game of the series -- unless it goes the full limit of seven games. Winning Saturday night's game to break the 1-1 deadlock gives. Vancouved great psychological boost but since it had already been proven that neither team is unbeatable, you can look for Brooklin Redmen to be more determined to even the series again, with a win tonight. An- other defeat and we'd have to say Fred Whalley's boys are in trouble and it could be all over after the fifth game on Wednesday night. BITS AND PIECES -- Ot- tawa's Red O'Quinn is spear- heading an attempt to have the Canadian Football League adopt the NFL rule, by which the home club may be penal- ized five yards any time a crowd persists in making so much noise (after two warn- ings) that the quarterback's signals can not be heard by his teammates . . . THE NFL opened its 48th season yester- day, with one new team in the group, New _ Orleans Saints, where Jim Taylor is now playing. But even without Taylor and Paul Hornung, who has retired, the Green Bay Packers are favored to repeat as champions. . . JOE CRONIN, American League president isn't going to per- mit that Kansas City problem to cloud up the impending World Series but he has said he will call a meeting after the series, to deal with Charles Finley's request to move his Athletics to a new location. MORE OF SAME -- Mont- real Canadiens have only 56 bodies at their training camp but the quality is good and "Toe" Blake is content. Vet- eran Dick Duff, last of 17 holdovers to come to terms, completes the Habs' expected roster, so it's 'a happy camp" ... LAST SEASON the six NHL teams played 45 pre-season exhibition games. The expanded 12-team loop has a record 77 games book- ed for this fall and they start- ed with Leafs' win over Bos- ton in London on Friday night. Oshawa hockey fans can look forward to a few of those professional exhibition games right here in our Civic Auditorium, with Toronto Leafs playing Rochester Americans and Wren Bilair's Minnesota North Stars book- ed to play Los Angeles, Cali- fornia and Pittsburgh. Boston Bruins declined their Oshawa invitation! ... EVA KLOBU- KOWSKA, Poland's co-holder of the world's 100-metre rec- ord, has been banned from European track and field competition. She failed to pass a sex test made by a panel of six doctors and was dropped from the Polish team. Gale Lumber Oust! Taylor faced only 19 batters lin the first six innings. Row- den followed with a double and then Hickey homered, to make the score 4--0. The three-for-three rally prov- ed necessary and was Colley's only bad inning. Chapman's single in the sixth was Plating's first hit. Vere Small singled with one out in the seventh and_ pinch-hitter "Van" Vanderveer got one in the 8th, again with one out. Each time, Taylor "'bore down" to avoid further trouble. Trailing by four runs and facing elimination, Toronto Plating gave it a great try in the bottom of the 9th inning. With one out, Hal Smith sing- led, advanced on Samll's in- field grounder and went to third on a passed ball. Then Glen VanEvery homered, to make the score 4-2. Oshawa faltered at this point and successive errors by in- fielders Ralph O'Reilly and h Davis, putting the tying s on base but O'Reilly gathered in Vanderveer's bid, to end the game and series. First Of Finals Off Hagersville PICKERING (Staff) -- Bay Ridges Shells moved within one more win of the Ontario Amateur Softball Association's All-Ontario Junior 'B' title, when they whipped Hagersville 8-2 in the first game of the All-Ontario finals, at Pickering Park, on Saturday. Once _ again _ right-hander "Stu" Higham proved a decid- ing factor as he pitched his best game of the year to record a total of 20 strikeouts while allowing only three hits, Higham had a no-hit, no-run game going for eight full in- nings but the visitors got to him in the final frame for their three hits and two runs. His rival, Hagersville Bill Nie also pitched well, having 10. strikeouts but he couldn't stem the Bay Ridges' batting power, which grabbed a total of 10 hits for their eight runs. The homesters struck early, in the first inning, on hits by Walt Hall and Bob Baird, plus Higham's triple and a throw- ing error, that accounted for three runs. The winners added a run in the second, a couple in the third, one in the fourth and their final tally in the eighth inning. PLUS McCREADY HURT VANCOUVER (CP)--Coach Fred Whalley plans to reorgan- ize his lineup tonight in an effort to get the Brooklin, Ont., Redmen back into contention for the Canadian senior lacrosse title. Whalley said Sunday he will use defenceman Mike Gray to shore up his defence and also intends to break up the club's first string forward line. The moves followed Satur- day's 19-5 loss to Vancouver Carlings. Vancouver, after its fourth Dominion title in seven years, leads the best-of-seven Mann Cup series 2-1, Other games scheduled for Wednesday 5 if necessary, Friday and Satur- day. All will be played in Van- couver. Whalley noted that his top forward line of Terry and John Davis and Elmer Tran was on the floor Saturday for 12 Van- couver goals. "We've got to do something when this happens," said Whal- ley. But the coach said he will not decide on a new forward combination until game time. "Gary gave us a few soft goals before he warmed up. But he had no help. Nobody Kinnon used Don Boyd for the first time Saturday but does not plan any further changes. Goaltender Bob McCready, who retired after Saturday's first period, will be back in the Brooklin lineup _ tonight. ' McCready, hampered by an injured right elbow, allowed eight goals in the opening 20 minutes. Gord Frederickson, who scor- ed 46 goals this season, scor- ed three goals in the last game, while goalie Skip Chapman turned in another strong effort for Carlings and has allowed Brooklin only 10 goals in the last two games. Spare goalie Gary Drysdale, who played only two games this year, took over but had little support. Oshawa alderman Bruce Mackey, seeing his first Mann Cup game, was appalled at the roughness allowed by the of ficials. Whalley, visibly upset by the loss, felt his club was really up for the game and couldn't get untracked after a BOB McCREADY - + + injured was checking." We were ter- rible, they just ran over us," said the Brooklin coach. Whalley said forwards Ken Thompson and Tom Conlin were the only Brooklin players who gave solid efforts Satur- day. disastrous first period. He stated, '"'our defence was as bad as I have seen and our goaltending just wasn't good Vancouver coach, Jack' Mc- enough." He said his club Oshawa Pam _ International Electronics advanced to the OASA Intermediate 'A' South- ern Ontario finals when they snatched a 14-inning, 6-3 vic- tory over Owen Sound Cotten Bus Lines, here at Alexandra Park, on Saturday night. The win, garnered on Jackie Sneddon's three-run homer after five innings of "over- time", gave the Oshawa club the provincial quarter-final round in two-straight games. They will now meet either Galt or Stoney Creek, in the Southern Ontario finals, with the series scheduled to get underway this weekend. Oshawa Pams had to score a run in the 8th inning to tie the score in a battle that had everything for the fan's enter- tainment. Ross Edmonston started for Owen Sound and went nine in- nings, fanning 12 batters and giving up two runs on six hits. Larry Marshall, for Oshawa, also pitched nine innings and he gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out 10 bat- ters, which left the two "'start- ers" very even. Oshawa scored first, in the second, when Bob Solomon opened with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Gib- bons. They had to wait until the 8th to tie the score on a walk to Alvin Tilk, Rich March's single and an error. Owen Sound scored once in the third on a walk to Ron Klages, Doug Whitney's single 'Pams' Put Out Owen Sound Via 14th- Inning Home Run Oshawa loaded the bases in the 10th but still couldn't get the winning run. Sneddon was tagged trying to score on a short passed ball. In the 12th, ™ March got to third with only one out and he too was tagged trying to score on a passed ball. : Mason improved as the game went along and Pams finally won the game in the 14th in- ning when Mason drew a walk to start. March was hit by a pitched ball, they advanced on a wild pitch and then Jackie Sneddon poled one of Lester's slants over the fence, for a , three-run homer, to end the game and series. | March, with three hits and Paul Gibbons with a pair, were Oshawa's top hitters while Whitney and Merv King each had two for the visitors. President Art Morton men- tioned that in the third period Brooklin didn't get a shot in the first six minutes of play and that this kind of offence wouldn't win many games. Port Perry Boys Near OASA Titles PORT PERRY (Staff) -- Port Perry Ballard's Lumber tied up their OASA Midget 'B' pro- vincial quarter - final series yesterday afternoon with an exciting 2-1 victory over Mac- Tier boys. Port Perry lads lost the first game 2-1 in MacTier on Fri- day night, when the homesters had three hits to Port Perry's lone safety and in the return game on Sunday, Ballards pick- ed up three hits and the visi- tors had just two, with Port Perry's Doug Hughes claiming 15_ strikeouts, Third and deciding game in this series will be played in Barrie, on Wednesday night, at eight o'clock.
