GA THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, September 22, 1967 TWO-STOREY HOME IN BEAU VALLEY SUBDIVISION lt Has Canewe 's First Heat Pump System Toilet troubles make them- selves known audibly. A toilet in good repair is seen but sel- dom heard. If you hear water running or dripping from the toilet how! or toilet tank, then repairs are in order, The most common trouble is a@ continuous drip or flow of water from the tank to the bow]. And this is most often caused by the tank ball which closes the outlet into the toilet bowl. Retnove the cover from the tank, Set it down carefully, somep:ace where it won't fall or be broken. A part such as this is difficult to replace and often requires the purchase of an éntire toilet. Flush the toilet once or twice and watch the action of the tank ball. Does it seat it- self properly: Does it go all the way down or do the wire stems | stick? | Turn off the water supply and jempty the tank. You will find a |guide for the wire stem on the | overflow tube. Adjust this so the ball falls directly on the outlet, not to oné eide or the other. } Perhaps the trip lever is not/!- 'working properly. Work the cillbiny Plan Given Special insolation is required for basement houses, The edges of the slab should be insulated to prevent rapid loss of heat and t@ avoid condensation at the base of the walls inside the house A very tough material is re tquired which will keep moisture out and at the same time not the susceptible to rot ordeter- foration. This insulation requir- es protection and this is done by fastening an asbestos board to the exterior face of the insu- lation. The fasteners penetrate through the insulation into nail- ing blocks in the thickened edge of the slab. The depth of this thickened edge depends on the requirements of the local gover- ning by-law for frost penetra- tion in the area The floor slab itself can be in- sulated over its entire area, there will be at least a vapour-barrier | under it, generally a polyethe-| lene film. While the slab is, in effect, solid, it does contain cer- tain built - in features. The heat-| ing ducts, plumbing and elect- vical conduits are buried in the concrete slabs. Steel reinforce-| ment is embedded in the con-| crete slab where required by the | structural designs. et na OSHAWA ENAMELLED ALUMINUM PRODUCTS For BEAUTY !... COMFORT !... ECONOMY ! It should work freely. If it doesn't lubricate the bushing next to the handle or replace the lever. Ths lower stem, the wire rod that screws right into the rubber ball, might be bent. Straighten- ing may help. Otherwise, re- plavé with a new rod. Quite often it is the ball itself that is at fault These get soft after a time and water leaks past them. Replacé with & new one. If the ball is not worn and it seats itself properly into the outlet, then check the con- dition of the outlet. It may be dirty and gri Clean with steel wool or fine emery cloth. Trouble with the tank ball or outlet i¢ indicated when the water in the tank is below the level of the overflow tube. If, when you check the tank, you discover that the water level is above the overflow tube, the trouble is with the water supply mechanism. The water supply mechanism {s called the ballcock. The water is turned on and off by a float valve. When the tank outlet is opened and the water rushes out the flu@t drops down, turning on the water. As the level rises, so does ihe float until it reaches the point where the valve is closed, Water not only flows into the tank, it flows into the bowl by way of a refill tube that leads into the overflow tube, If the valve doés not close properly, the water will continue to run into the bowl. Sometimes just bending slightly will cure the trouble since it will cause the float to rise higher to close the valve, NEW FLOAT NEEDED Sometimes the float develops a teak, becomes water logged. Ther, it doesn't come up nigh enough to close the valve. Buy a new float. It easily screws onto the float rod. If it isn't the float or the float rod then it is probably the washer in the valve plunger at the viher énd of the float rod. Th's comes apart easily; just examine it closely first.
