It is the | -kind of thing that drives the av- ~erage amateur to quiet despera- 'tion because there seems no way to make it even passably attractive. After all, there isn't any room to put anything. THAT THE problem is not an insoluable one has been proven, however, time and again by professionals who like to get their teeth in the matter just to prove that it is possible to make {such an area (or more proper- -ly, areaway) not only passable but downright attractive. : One thing we have noted they most invariably do is to give "you something attractive to look at the very end of this seem- ingly interminable corridor. If overhead lighting is out of the question (it's no- where near as expensive as you think) glossy enamel in place of the chalky dull white paint is usually recommended. This leaves you only those two long walls facing each other blankly. But, that's where the fun is. Book lovers will 'want to put books there; art lovers can make quite an effec- tive home gallery out of space such--as this. Phyllis Blakeley, assistant provincial archivist, says it was first thought the chambers were constructed by the Royal Engineers who built the Halifax Citadel. However preliminary investi- gation indicated no connection with tunnels or sewers from the Citadel, Archivists now are working 'on the theory that the caverns were built in the early 1800s, before sewer lines were built. It is thought the chambers could have been used as storage bins for sewage from nearby houses. RUBBER CONSUMPTION AKRON, Ohio (UPI) -- Amer- iean manufacturers will use enough rubber in 1967 to fill a train extending from Chicago to Pittsburgh. The Goodyear Chemical Divi- sion, world's largest producer of synthetic rubber, expects .do- mestic use of rubber to exceed 5 billion pounds for the first time this year. More than 75 per cent of it will be synthetic. The total amounts to about 26 pounds per person in the United States, compared with per capita consumption of less than four pounds in the rest of the Free World.
