H. RAMSEY Today's lesson concludes our two-quarter study of the Book of Acts. We began with the birth of the Christian church at Pentecost, where Christ gave the mandate to the disciples to witness to Him beginning at Jerusalem and extending to the uttermost parts of the earth. In succeeding lessons we learned how the apostles went about obeying that command; and of the conversion, mission- ary journeys and great work of the Apostle Paul. In a sense this lesson is a fitting climax to the entire series. Throughout his missionary lifetime Paul had hoped and prayed he might visit Rome and minister to the church there as he had for so many other churches from Antioch to NEW RABBI Rabbi J. Bienenfeld, who recently succeeded Rabbi M. | Kutzinger as pastor of Beth | Zion Hebrew congregation, here. A native of New York City, Rabbi Bienenfeld was ordained at Yeshilda Univer- sity, New York City and holds a master of science degree in education. Osha- wa, his first pastoral charge is made up of some 90 families. GOLDEN TEXT "I am debtor both to the THE VERSE "BEHOLD, now ST. But even in his bondage Paul was a constant, effective witness and evangelist for Christ. So power- ful was his faith that, by way of the ever-changing soldiers who guarded him, his gospel was carried even to the household of mighty Caesar. Three months after the ship- wreck on Malta, Paul continued journey was uneventful and, after stops at Syracuse and Rhegitm, they landed at Puteo- li and went the rest of the way to Rome on foot, less than 50 miles. When word of Paul's arrival reached Rome, many of the Christians there went to meet him. Some walked the entire 43 miles to Appii Forum. Others met him at the Three Taverns, 10 miles nearer to Rome. Their welcome was warm and did much to cheer and encourage Paul. Arriving in Rome, the other prisoners were delivered to the captain of the guards, but Paul was allowed to stay in a house that had been rented for him. He apparently enjoyed a cer- tain amount of freedom, but remained chained to the sol- ljourney and happy visit there lfor he had many friends there. |He was a Roman citizen and the Imperial City was the ruler land center of the known world LEADERS INVITED diers who guarded him. After several days' rest Paul was ready to return to his work. Paul Even In Bondage Evangelist For Christ done nothing contrary to the customs of théir fathers; that the Romans had found no cause for death in him and were will- ing to set him free but the con- tinued accusations of the Jews had led him to appeal to Cae- sar, as was his right as a Roman citizen; that he had come to Rome on the strength of that appeal and not to make accusations against his own 'ople. to Rome. How- ever, they were an open-minded group and wished to hear more about Christian doctrines, so Paul set a day for a general conference. On the appointed day a great number assembled at Paul's house and the all-day confer- ence began. Basing his argu- ment and message on Old Tes- tament scripture, Paul explained the kingdom of God as a spiritual kingdom under the Messiah rather than the ROSSLAND ROAD FREE METHODIST Poster: Rev. R. He "persuaded them concern- ing Jesus," giving them God's plan for man's salvation in clear terms. And he proved from the books of the law of Moses and the prophets that Jesus had fulfilled all that was foretold of the Messiah. When the conference finally adjourned, there were some who believed and some who believed not, as is always the case. Unperturbed, Paul satis- fied himself by quoting Isaiah's prophecy of disbelief (Isaiah 6:9, 10), and tellng them that the gospel of salvation belonged to the Gentiles as well as the Jews, and that the Gentiles would hear and believe, The Book of Acts closes with a brief summary of the next two years of Paul's life. Though a prisoner in his own house, he spent his time writing, preach- ing and teaching, continuing hs witness to Christ.
