10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, October 16, 1967 SPORTS BEAT By Eric Wesslby OF The Times Staff OSHAWA GENERALS proved again last night that there's nothing like junior hockey for unpredictable hap- penings. Most people wrote Generals off for the season a week ago, following that dis- asterous opening night against Kitchener Rangers. But coach Ike Hildebrand and company worked hard all week, got steady perform- ances from everyone and dumped Hamilton Red Wings here last night. THIS YEAR'S edition of the Generals has. spirit. And it's catching. I stood with man- ager Ivan Davie at hockey games last winter in Whitby and he seldom said anything. Last night, he was like a cat on a hot, tin roof. And the crowd was caught up in the spirit of Hildebrand's youth- ful contingent. Spectators ap- preciated the fine checking of the club through the third period and it's unfortunate some 500 spectators from the previous week didn't make a return visit. PRESENCE OF Ivan Boldi- rey and Peter Nevin in the lineup gave Hildebrand an opportunity to use four lines and each committed itself well. The club played as if it couldn't believe it was ahead for the first two periods but, led by Nevin, put on a good checking display in the third to pin Wings in their own end time and again. If they can keep up this type of perform- ance it won't be as short @ season as some people sug- gested following the opening loss. And attendance will } rise. THE HOCKEY season doesn't become official in Toronto until the traditional parade up and down the ice surface by the band of the 48th Highlanders.
