Bm TURNING POINT in last night's Ontario Hockey Asso- ciation junior "A" game at Hamilton between the Gen- erals and Red Wings appear- ed to come when John Clay- ton was tagged for holding a Hamilton player. Before play was whistled to a halt, how- ever, Oshawa's Chuck Gyles had been rammed _ heavily into the back boards but no penalty was called. On tele vision, coach Ike Hildebrand -appeared somewhat upset, and from this far away it ap- pears with justification. The score was 2-0 at the time and Red Wings quickly upped the score to 3-0 BILL YEO made an aus- picious debut for Generals in league play, but there it was again, four goals against. Well, there's one thing you can say for the club, it's con- sistent. Sunday night, Hilde- brand's charges entertain Ni- agara Falls Flyers, who, for a while, looked as if they were going to pile up a lengthy lead over the other contend- ers for first place in the league. GETTING BACK to last nights game, Generals couldn't get a sustained of- fensive going too often, but this was mainly because they were playing against an ex- perienced junior "A" club And any team coached by Bush makes few mistakes. He has his players well versed in the fundamentals of the game. He likes skaters, and with Fred Speck, Danny Law- son, Richard Petit and Renald LeClere he has his share of scooters, BUSH WAS recently com- paring the junior teams and in his estimation Generals don't come off too badly. He rates .Kitchener and Marl- boros as the clubs to beat for first place honors, despite Niagara Falls' fast start. He doesn't think Flyers have the over-all cast to challenge Marlboros and _ Kitchener, both of whom have quite a few holdovers from last year. Bush thinks Wings will 'finish in the top four, mainly be- cause although the club is only & THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, November 10, 1967 gi SPORTS BEAT By Eric Wesslby OF The Times Staff realizing 60 per cent of its potential, it's bound to im- prove when the older players click and they start playing as a team THE HAMILTON -- coach rates Montreal fifth because the scouting staff recruited some good, young players. He rates Rejean Houle as one of the brightest professional prospects in the league. Jun- ior Canadiens traded three players to London for the right" Winger. "I'M GOING to give Osh- awa the nod over St' Cath- arines because they also have done some good recruiting," Bush said. "They're a big, talented club."' Like everyone else, Bush thinks Generals will hold their own until Christmas dnd then _ start moving as the younger play- ers get their skating legs. Of course, junior hockey teams, like race horses, are actually impossible to handicap. SHOULD BE a good week- end at Civic Auditorium, with Niagara Falls here for a Sun- day night meeting with Gen- erals, There's quite a bit of feeling between the two for mer Boston Bruins' farm clubs. And former Niagara Falls' players Dune Wilson and Jim Whittaker would like nothing better than to hand the EMMS' twosome, Hap and son Paul, a setback in their first meeting of the season. And don't forget, it's prize night as the 1,000,000th cus- tomer for Civic Auditorium is expected to go through the gates sometime in the eve- ning. SATURDAY NIGHT, Ivan Davie and Jim Cherry bring their Whitby Lasco Steelers to Civic Auditorium for a clash with Bob Heard and Bob Dionne's Oshawa Crushmen. The two junior "B" clubs haven't been rivals long, just three years now, but it's been loud as to which is playing in a better league. Crush- men earned an exhibition win in Whitby earlier this year, so Davie and company will be | trying a little harder for the | equalizer.
