"Tt meant my forecast was right," she said in an interview. "T Jove rain when that hap- pens." Lillian, a tall, slender girl, works for the Dominion meteo- rological bureau at Toronto in- ternational airport, one of the few "weather women" in Can- ada. Her job is keeping track of existing weather conditions an' reporting on them to plane pil- ots flying in the Toronto area. She also uses charts, radar screens and weather station re- ports to forecast the weather situation at Toronto. Lillian was born in Shanghai where her father was manager of an electric and radio com- pany. The family moved to Hong Kong in 1957, and Lillian was sent to McGill University, Montreal, where she chose to study meteorology. After grad- uation she trained in Ottawa, Toronto and Trenton, Ont., be- fore being assigned to the air- port staff. CHANGED PLANS Personally, I like to believe that a "Thank you" is always "in." So with all due respect to Pilgrims of yore and the women who were their wives, here is an expression of my Thanksgiv- ing gratitude because I'm a woman now. First of all, as a woman should be, I am thankful to be living in a time when it is a re- cognizable fact that a woman's life today can have many stages and roles. Instead of settling for a still view of life that offers no variations, we can all make the scope of our lifetime a contin- uously moving picture in which we do many things. Second, I am thankful to be a woman in a day when education for girls is the rule and not the exception. And I am even more thankful to be around when night schools abound throughout the land and when colleges are beginning to find added ways to offer continuing education to women who want to increase their dimension in the years when they are home with their children. She says her fellow meteorol-; TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ogists are friendly and helpful, but pilots are sometimes a bit rough. "They don't know whether or not to believe I really know what I am talking about," she gays. Jonathan, a Shanghai-born re- searcher in nuclear physics at the University of Toronto, trusts her, though. They had planned on a Mari- times trip for their honeymoon, but on Lillian's advice drove to Virginia instead, missing a cold, rainy weather front. Lillian's sister Nancy, a chemist working in California, also learned to take her advice during a recent visit to Toronto. Third, I am definitely thank- ful to live in an era when tech- loff the shelf and spreading their wings anew. Finally, I just want to count) my blessings for the privilege of |being alive. Though I probably would tave loved to have presided over a hearth, I am just delighted every day when I can push but- tons and have many of say household chores done while J punch typewriter keys. Fourth, I am eternally thank- ful to live in an age when wom- anpower is more important than) it ever was before. Today our) nation needs us to help support people under 18 and over 65 who} are increasing in greater num-) bers than the age group that supports them. | As a result, 48 per cent of us} from 18 to 64 are joining the!
