The wondrous wheel was perhaps the most fascinating of the many firsts brought north by the celebrations. It came by river, like al- most everything that enters the North, a creaking veteran of innumerable prairie fairs, standing precariously astride a Mackenzie River barge. Yet age didn't tarnish the | timeless appeal for the young Indians, Eskimos and whites who had never seen a ferris wheel before. The whole population of Col- ville Lake--a settlement so re- mote, even in the Northwest Territories, that its inhabit- ants are known as "the people at the back of the earth"-- came en masse to see it. Tales of the wheel spread through the N.W.T. In a way no teacher ever could, it made Canada real and like- able. A human touch was evident in many Indian-Eskimo events during the Centennial Year as the old theme of se- paration gave. way to partici- pation. TREAT FOR CHILDREN The Hillcrest Community | Club of Ottawa gave 100 Eski- mo children from Baffin Is- | land an unforgettable 'holiday in the first city they had ever seen. Meanwhile, the impressive | Indian-Eskimo pavilion at Expo 67 gave the world an un- censored and eye-opening pic- ture of native life. In the provinces, numerous powwows and other gather- ings brought Indians of var- ious bands together. But in the territories there are no reserves, few roads, little radio, no television, and | certainly no ferris wheels. The idea of a ferris wheel mounted on a federal barge didn't catch on in Ottawa, where officials had visions of in Great Slave Lake. However, Fort Smith publisher Jim Whelly, the in- defatigable N.W.T. centennial co-ordinator, prevailed. A Nova Scotian emigre cap- tivated by the North, Whelly 'Centennial Celebrations Dar League Results Take Ferris Wheel North saw the value of the idea when it occurred to him that his own children, born in the North, had never seen a ferris wheel. Northern Affairs Arthur Laing, a visionary himself, was misty-eyed when the barge carrying the wheel left Hay River, N.W.T., in July. LEARNED ABOUT CITY A second barge contained models of Edmonton's planned city centre complex, the CNR's new turbo train, hydroelectric dams, freeways and hotels. One elderly Indian was going through the exhibit for the fifth time when a curious crew member asked him what the attraction was. "I never saw a city in my life,' replied the old man. "I never knew what a city was. Now I think I know." Ablaze with flags, the barges circled Great Slave Lake, glided down the Mack- enzie River, and slipped into the Arctic Ocean as far as ice would allow. A rock 'n' roll band, a folk trio and an organist provided th® music for dances that last- ed. well into the sunny north- ern night at each settlement. At Tuktoyaktuk, a grateful community took the entertain- ers hunting whales. At Rein- deer Station, the whole troupe went mountain climbing at 2 a.m. as a result of a question by one of the visitors. Starry-eyed children at Snowdrift kept the wheel turn- ing for five hours. DRANK AND FEASTED At Fort Good Hope, an excit- ed gathering put a new roof on the dance hall while await- ing the arrival of the barges. Hay River celebrated with a special liquor licence that cov- ered a couple of blocks, in- doors and outdoors, and fea- tured barbecued grizzly bear, buffalo, moose and caribou. The inhabitants of Fort Franklin made an _ unprece- dented trip to Fort Norman, the nearest stop, for the show. Awaiting them was not only the wheel but candy floss and popcorn, Meanwhile, British Colum- bia's popular Barkerville show, singers like Monique Leyrac and Alan Mills, the University of Alberta mixed Minister | WOODVIEW PARK MIXED Results--Teenboppers 4, Sky- larks 1; The Cryers 3, Sharp- shooters 2 and Hippies 3, Atom-| ies 2. | A GIFT CERTIFICATE FROM oe. "My attitude was 'let's get that damn thing done and clean up the paper work at the end of the year'," says Whelly. He notes that the N.W.T. is 1,300,000 square miles in size. "It's one-third of Canada, and we certainly didn't spend one-third of what Canada spent," he adds. As for the ferris wheel, un- less a sea-going model can be devised, he doesn't recom- mend another such adventure, despite the good results.
