(AP) -- Investi- gators have ordered an autopsy in the death of Evalyn McLean, 25, 'who was once among the heirs to the famed Hope dia- mond. Miss McLean's body was dis- found Tuesday in the rambling ranch home where she lived alone. Neighbors in this Dallas suburb broke into the home when they saw no activity there for several days. | A toxicologist's study is under | way to determine the cause of death. | Miss McLean's Body was dis-| covered lying on a bed, fully clothed. There was no indication of foul play, Justice of the Peace B. B, Carpenter said. She was the daughter of John R. (Jock) McLean of Palm Beach, Fla. A former Dallas debutante, she had never mar- ried. She spent her time work- ing with the horses she raised and trained at her Friendly Acres horse ranch six miles northeast of Plano. | STONE WAS GRANDMA'S The Hope diamond was once| owned by her grandmother, Ev- alyn Walsh McLean. Miss McLean and six other grandchildren never were al-| lowed to so much as touch the/ diamond, a stone reputed to} have brought ill luck to most! who were associated with it. | The diamond was bought from Evalyn Walsh McLean's estate by New York jeweler Harry Winston in 1947. He gave it to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. Evalyn Walsh McLean liked to wear the Hope diamond to her gala Washington parties. She claimed she had turned down offers of nearly $2,000,000 for the diamond. She said she bought it in the early 1900s after her marriage to the late Ned McLean. Mrs. McLean paid) $40,000 for the stone and took it to a priest to have it blessed. The diamond, according to its legend, was once possessed by King Louis XVI and Marie An- toinette but disappeared after the couple was beheaded during the French Revolutiun. The first owner of the stone was a French traveller named Taver- nier, who sold the diamond to Louis XIV of France. Tavernier later was ripped to death by a| dog pack. | | The stone derives {its same from Henry Thomas Hope, a) London banker who bought It in} 1830. | | Toronto Reneges TORONTO (CP) -- Montreal eculptor Armand Vaillancourt eays he has received no pay- ment from the $91,600 grant council voted for him to com- plete his 70-ton work at the | city's High Park. The sculpture, a massive) block cast in Mr. Vaillan-| court's on-site blast furnace, is still unfinished. It was to be the centrepiece of & permanent sculpture exhibition featuring the work of artists invited to a month-long symposium lact summer. The 35-year-old bearded sculp- tor said he has been harassed by city officials and "treated like a dog." He said he spent $25,000 of his own money -- $60 000 of it borrowed--on the pro- ject and had lost another $150,- 000 worth of commissions while the project dragged on. The city originally budgeted $120,000 for the symposium, part of it paid by federal and provincial governments. City council voted another $91,600 last month to get the Vaillan- court work finished. In return, the city was to get the exhibition of sculpture by some of the world's best known artists. Mr. Vaillancourt's huge work alone is estimated to be! worth $250,000. | The parts of the sculpture) now lie unassembled in the mud at High Park. | | IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT LIFE INSURANCE Why Not Call TOM FARQUHARSON SUN LIFE Assurance Company herney's FURNITURE WORLD that Before Christmas Buy Your Home Its Giff...
