By DOUG MARTIN VANCOUVER (CP) -- The Canadian Figure Skating Championships may be skat- ing on thin ice here Jan. 9-14. The combined champion- ships and Olympic trials have been detoured out of the Pacif- ic National Exhibition grounds and into small sec- ondary arenas by the touring professionals of Ice Capades. Promoters for the touring show locked up the PNE grounds several months ago by booking the 13,000-seat Col- iseum for Jan. 8-14 and taking an option on the 5,000-seat Forum If the Coliseum is finished on the target date of the first week in January, the seven- day ice show will have the added advantage of being the | attraction that opens the building. If work is not complete, the show will move into the Forum, nearby on the PNE grounds. "We were hoping to get in on the ground floor at the new says Mrs. J. H. CFSA officials were looking | forward to rceord crowds in the big, new building, drawn by the lure of the Coliseum it- self and a strong British Co- lumbia team. Instead, says Mrs. Mitchell, the amateurs found Ice Ca- pades: had the two buildings locked up and had a clause in the contract. prohibiting simi- lar events on PNE grounds for six weeks before and after their visit. A PNE spokesman acknowl- edged the clause and said other big shows ask for simi- lar protection. Ice Capades officials say they are sorry about the clash but they cannot change their dates. The CFSA dates are inflexi- ble because they are part of a chain of competitions leading to the Olympics Feb. 6-18 at Grenoble, France, and the world championships Feb. 27- March 3 at Geneva. The figure skaters were forced to put their showcase into the 3,000-seat Kerrisdale Arena and the 1,500-seat North Vancouver Recreational Centre. Seniors will skate in the bigger building while nov- ices and juniors compete in the smaller one. "We're not too concerned, though,"' says Mrs. Mitchell. "We think we'll break even. We're operating on an ama- teur level and we're on a tight budget of $10,000 to $12,000." The only capital now avail- able is $800 put up by the 16 British Columbia figure skat- Vancouver Problem ing clubs co-sponsoring the championships. The championships have two strong selling points in bucking the professionals and the new Coliseum. B.C. skaters already hold two of the four senior Cana- dian titles and are rated as at least a fair chance to grab the other two; and it will be the first time in 18 years the championships have been held in Vancouver. Betty and John MckKilligan of West Vancouver won the senior pairs last year in Toron to and their clubmates Joni Graham and Don Phillips won the dance event. Karen Maggnussen of North Vancouver, a 15-year-old schoolgirl and a brilliant free skater, finished second to Val- erie Jones of Toronto in the 1966 championships. Jay Humphry, a _ former North Vancouver skater now training at Toronto, finished second in the men's singles to | Donald Knight of Dundas, Ont.
