THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, December 26, 1967 Customer Hot Line Gives Women Vent To Let Off Steam TORONTO (CP) -- The housewife on the phone wanted to know if she could buy baby food at a discount--she had just had twins which she hadn't counted on because she was on the pill. The call was received by the genial president and general manager of the Power chain of supermarkets, Leon Weinstein, who turned the call over to his secretary who referred her to a social agency What does social counselling have to do with supermarket managing? That was one of the about 300 calls. a week Mr. Weinstein receives at his office. Fourteen months ago Mr Weinstein installed a customer "hot line'. for people to call with complaints, suggestions and questions ranging from "Why are bananas only nine cents a pound downtown and 14 cents in my local market?" to "Can you get me tickets to the world series?" | So far, none of Mr Wein-| stein's competitors has followed! his lead. Norma Carrier, mem-! bership chairman of the Cana- dian Consumers Association} said, 'Psychologically, Mr.| Weinstein has done a marvel- lous thing for women." Margaret Rouble, head of Women Against Soaring Prices, said the "hot line" has won Mr Weinstein many friends among consumers. "'We hear so many complaints we don't know who to turn to." In fact, many of the problems Mr. Weinstein gets have to be settled with the individual store managers. His public relations councellor, Jack Sturman, adds: "People are looking for a chance to talk to someone to 'let off steam'."" Mr. Weinstein believes women are shopping more shrewdly-- "We're collecting lots of lists thrown away in our stores,"' he said. He dislikes, however, shop- pers who pummel and pinch the fruit and those who open the jar ef baby food, stick their finger in to taste then put it back on the shelf if it doesn't please their palate. He also wishes women would not take shopping carts home with them. "Nobody would think constantly walk off with shop- of taking a $20 chair, yet they ping carts." SLEEP ON JOB SEATTLE (AP) -- Thieves) and Christmas trees turned a Seattle service station lot into a double duty station for mem- bers of a boy scout troop. The boys. sold the trees in the day- time to earn money for some new camping tents and slept in a bunk-rigged bus at night to prevent theft of their merchan- dise. DON'T SHAKE THE CAGE LONDON (AP) -- Never, never shake an occupied bird cage on British television.
