Whitby’s gold medal winner Anne Ottenbrite will receive a warm welcome when she returns from the Commonwealth Games on October 11.
Ottenbrite, who won the 200 – metre breast stroke event in Brisbane, Australia, will be met at the town limits and escorted through the town on a fire engine.
The town plans to honor her at a reception at the municipal buildings, and everyone is encouraged to come out and support our 16-year-old world-class swimmer.
Banners, a brass band and local dignitaries will meet the motorcade at the municipal buildings. At press time the exact time was not known, but interested persons should call the Parks and Recreation Department to confirm times.
Since winning three gold medals in Thunder Bay at the Canada Games in August 1981, Ottenbrite has won medals at the World Aquatic Games in Ecuador, and now the Commonwealth Games.
She has yet to compete in the 100-metre breast stroke and the relay events at this year’s Commonwealth Games. Ottenbrite, who lives at 300 Fairview Drive in Whitby, swam with clubs in Whitby, Oshawa and Ajax.
Mayor Attersley sent flowers to show the town’s support and appreciation when word came Ottenbrite had bettered her own record and won the gold for Canada on Saturday Oct. 2.
