Joe Nieuwendyk won’t be returning to the Whitby Warriors this season.
Nieuwendyk, now a member of the Calgary Flames N.H.L. hockey team, was a former standout with the Junior Lacrosse team.
Warriors coach Bryce Jordan describes his former player as “probably the best junior lacrosse player in Canada.” Nieuwendyk was twice named most valuable player for his team in the Canadian playoff finals.
Nieuwendyk can’t play this season since he is completing his studies at Cornell University.
Nieuwendyk’s Calgary teammate and fellow Whitby nature Gary Roberts, who also played with the Warriors, won’t be back with the team either.
He is under orders from the Flames not to play, to avoid risk of injury.
