Whitby’s Joe Nieuwendyk was named co-player of the week in the 11 – team conference in which his Cornell University varsity hockey team plays.
The E.C.A.C. award followed a strong performance in two back-to-back games two weekends ago. In the first game against St. Lawrence, Joe scored a short-handed goal in the third period and racked up four assists. The next day, against Clarkson, he scored two goals, including the game winner, helping his team to a 4 – 2 victory. In the Clarkson game, Cornell wound up on top 7 – 4.
Nieuwendyk’s offensive performance has pushed him into second place in the Cornell team scoring race with 32 points. He is also ranked among the top scorers in the national college stats. He is currently leading his team in short-handed goals and power play goals with 2 and 8 respectively.
Last year Joe was E.C.A.C. and Ivy League Rookie of the year and was a second round draft pick for the Calgary Flames.
As of last week, the Cornell team was ranked fourth in its conference with a 9 – 4 – 2 record.
