Whitby’s own hockey hero, Joe Nieuwendyk, continues to impress U.S. College hockey fans with his fine scoring record in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
So far this season, Nieuwendyk has accumulated 14 goals and 15 assists for a total of 29 points during the 15 Cornell games he has played in. This record will undoubtedly make Nieuwendyk a strong contender for the season’s Hobey Baker Award given to the most valuable U.S. College hockey player.
The 20 – year old Nieuwendyk is the leading scorer for the Cornell team and is tied for second in the E.C.A.C.
Nieuwendyk’s past history is similarly impressive, as he was ranked fourteenth throughout the U.S. College League for scoring last year, and received All – American status. In ’85 he was drafted in the second round by the Calgary Flames.
The 6 ft. 2 in. 200 lb. centre is a former Whitby resident and was heavily involved in sports during his years at Henry St. High. In his third year at Cornell, Nieuwendyk is majoring in business management. Tied for ninth place in the E.C.A.C., the Cornell team has eight wins and 11 losses at this point, with eight regular season games remaining.
