8 Friday, January 10, 2025 brooklintowncrier.com Using Social Media in Different Ways It's finally my own down time. My husband has sports on TV while discussing the latest political antics of the upcoming U.S. president. Typically I like to watch a good game, but I'm in the mood for some quiet. I grab my phone and play a game on it in another room. Then I leave the game and scroll for information about a personal project I'm working on. My daughter is also in the room on her phone, watching a movie on it while talking to her friend who's viewing the same flick. For a moment I lament that we should be doing something together, but I don't have the energy to orchestrate or argue to get there. Instead, I work on my project. And that's when I realized how each of us uses social media so differently. My husband uses it for news, sports and connections with friends. I use it to connect with friends and family and as a research and entertainment resource. My daughter, on the other hand, appears to use it for everything. Connecting with friends, entertainment, homework help, trend watching, research, gaming, shopping and just mindless scrolling. I asked her about how she uses it and the answer surprised me. Turns out that while she does use it all those ways, mostly she considers it an entertainment tool. She tells me that there's so much fake stuff and AI generated content that she doesn't trust anything she sees. The influencers she watches provide entertainment in the form of something to mock and laugh about. I realize that while there is so much out there on how social media is damaging our kids, it may also be making some of them more aware of how online content is not real, that it's attempting to manipulate them. They aren't buying into it. Somewhat relieved, I snuggled into my favorite chair with the dog on my lap and streamed my favourite show. My project can wait. MARKETING YOUR HOME FOR ALL IT IS WORTH! COLOURS OF THE YEAR SURE TO INSPIRE It's true that a neutral colour palette that appeals to a wide variety of buyers is recommended when listing your house for sale. But if you've recently moved into a home new to you and want to make it your own, the Colours of the Year (COTY) 2025 are sure to inspire! This time last year, we discovered colours like Blue Nova, a blend of blue and violet from Benjamin Moore. The King Home Team: Royal Heritage Realty invites you to discover this year's emerging trends: Beautitone's Midnight Flora, a deep, dramatic red-purple, promises to captivate with its magical, mysterious depth. It's one of seven hues along with four supporting neutrals in the brand's new palette, which includes Stillness, a deep green-blue that conjures feelings of calmness and tranquility; Bloom, a gentle earthly pink that is sweet, youthful and balances the deeper tones within the palette; and Drift, a mid- tone blue reminiscent of a serene ocean or a clear sky. Behr Paint, Rumors, "an engaging ruby red that makes a statement and captivates with its vivacity," is the paint manufacturer's COTY. The deep hue brings drama and elegance both inside and outside your home and has an energy that "exudes confidence and sophistication," according to the brand. Benjamin Moore's COTY is Cinnamon Slate, described by the brand as a "delicate mix of heathered plum and velvety brown." It's among 10 hues in its Colour Trends 2025 palette, which also includes Sea Salt, Leather Saddle Brown, Chowning's Tan, Tissue Pink, Stained Glass, Ashwood Moss, Rosepine, Paris Rain and Glacier White. Dulux Paints by PPG's COTY is Purple Basil, a high-impact hue that embodies warm, rich purple shades, supporting the growing trend of using dramatic colours in home décor. Sherwin-Williams created its first-ever Colour Capsule of the Year, which features Grounded, a versatile and captivating brown that imparts richness in spaces that call for the stability of a refined earth tone. Sunbleached is an airy light neutral that's somewhere deeper than white, not quite grey, and ventures beyond a basic beige or taupe. Chartreuse, a historic colour, is a vibrant yellow green, while Rain Cloud is a stormy and deep grey-blue hue. Sico Paint by PPG's COTY is Starry Night, a deep purple hue that demonstrates the transformative power of colour found in nature. "Starry Night invokes the depth and drama of the night sky, while also providing the comfort we get from knowing the same galactic events we see from our backyards are being seen by others around the world," the brand says.
