Ruddy retired from photography in 1960 and accepted a job in the library at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital (now Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences). She died at Whitby on September 15, 1980 and is buried at St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Port Whitby.
