- Description
- A line of people waiting outside a milk rations store extends beyond the frame of the photo. The large sign above the open entrance reads “Союзмолоко” or “Soyuzmoloko,” loosely translated as “Milk Alliance.” At the time of this photo in 1933, Wienerberger states that milk was only available by medical prescription for the sick and for young children. Such prescriptions, like ration cards, were restricted to qualified city residents and workers, and not accessible to rural residents.
