- Description
- The photographer shows a former palace that had been converted into a summer residence for the highest ranking Health Minister of the USSR.
Crimea, a part of Soviet Russia at the time, was a popular location for sanatoriums and holiday resorts available to Communist party officials, with some reserved as a reward for high performance workers and foreign consultants and their families.
Wienerberger's wife became ill in 1933 and was allowed to go to a health sanatorium in Crimea. She reported to her husband that there was barely enough to eat. As described in his memoir, Hart auf hart, he quickly bought some provisions at a Torgsin and threatened a postal official in order to get the package delivered to her.
Overwhelmed by the stresses he endured in Kharkiv, Wienerberger also spent a brief period of time in Crimea to recuperate at the conclusion of his assignment in the autumn of 1933. - Notes
