Hnatyuk was born 1922 and lived in the village until 1951. Theirs was a family of four, no father. The famine left a lasting impact. It was inhumane to leave people without any grain and without any help. Mass deaths occurred, entire large families died. More than 50 per cent of the population was left in the village and some went away. The cow saved their family. Collective farm rations were meager and came too late, when they could not save many people. A burial brigade was appointed and its members received 1 kg of bread per person. People were buried in mass graves called kahaty.
